__/ QUOTE OF THE WEEK

"She's only worn one layer this season."

-- Coach Mark Wetmore of Colorado, in a conversation about Colorado freshman Amber Smith, Ishpeming Westwood, the day before Colorado's teams won both the men's and women's NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships. __/ SNOW GREETS TURKEYMAN TROT RUNNERS IN LANSING Race Director Chuck Block sent along this recap of the Thanksgiving Day Turkeyman Trot and post-race goodies appropriate for the day: "The 500 people plus who ran and walked the Lansing Turkeyman Trot got to experience the true feeling of the holidays with 6 inches that fell Wednesday night. A DC-9 airplane even went off the tarmac at the Capital City Airport. Thankfully the people were okay. The weather left the course Thursday morning slushy, slick, and snowy. We got to experience those aspects during the race. When the slow times appear remember cross country skis may have been the better choice of foot gear. Everyone who participated helped themselves to the feast prepared by the Turkeyman who served hot fresh shaved bbq turkey meat from breasts and legs. You could have a whole piece of breast and leg if desired. This year was truly an experience that will be remembered."

__/ NCAA CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS -- DIVISION I, TERRE HAUTE, INDIANA, MONDAY, NOV. 22 "You always have to run the race," they say. And so they did. No. 1 Wisconsin men, heavy favorites before the race, were surprised by the Colorado men who won by a mere 4 points. The women's individual favorite, Kim Smith, had no trouble claiming the title, though. Smith made her professional debut just a couple of days later, winning the 68th Manchester Road Race on Thanksgiving Day. Michigan teams have had better days. Central Michigan men were the top men's team in 23rd place, led by Tristan Pearlberg. Michigan men finished 26th, led by All-American Nate Brannen. Freshman Dustin Voss finished first among the 28th place Michigan State men. Notre Dame, considered to be one of the top contenders, finished 11th. Michigan women managed the mud a little better; Rebecca Walter led the team to a 6th place finish. Freshman Danette Doetzel was first among the 14th place Michigan State women. Individual Kate Boyles, Cornell, finished 57th and Amber Smith, a member of the winning Colorado team, finished 52nd. Look for the Michigan Runner TV show about the championships with host Tim Broe in early December. -- DIVISION II, EVANSVILLE, INDIANA, SATURDAY, NOV. 20 Grand Valley women finished 4th in Division II action-- the Lakers fourth straight top five finish. Northern Michigan women finished 7th among the 24 teams. Grand Valley men also had a good day, finishing 6th in their third straight championship appearance; Hillsdale men were 8th and Wayne State men finished 15th. -- CALVIN MEN ARE DIVISION III CHAMPIONS

The Calvin Cross Country team placed three runners in the top 20 to win the Division III Championship in Eau Clare, Wisconsin, on Saturday. Coach Brian Diemer's team also won in 2003 and 2000. For complete results of all three divisions see http://ncaasports.com/crosscountry/

__/ FOOTLOCKER CROSS COUNTRY REGIONALS, SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 27

Justin Switzer, Daniel Roberts, John Black and Bekah Smeltzer are among the possible runners returning from 2003 Midwest Regional Footlocker Cross Country meet. The top eight boys and the top eight girls from Saturday's race will compete at the Footlocker Nationals in San Diego, December 11. Rockford's Dathan Ritzenhein set the Midwest course record in 2000 at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside course in Kenosha, Wisconsin.

For more information see http://footlockercc.com/ __/ MRN ON THE ROAD - TERRE HAUTE, INDIANA

An early morning downpour made for a very muddy course for the NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships. There were to be no course records in the conditions. We talked with Michigan's Nick Willis, who is spending this season recovering from an injury.

"How do you feel about not running, today" we asked.

"Not my kind of conditions," said Nick.

"Whose kind of conditions would these be? we asked.

"Flat footed runners."

We learn something every day.
