__/ MARISSA TREECE IS FOOTLOCKER FINALIST - Marissa Treece finished 9th (18:03) at the Footlocker Midwest Regionals at the University of Wisconsin Parkside, Saturday November 25. The Maple City-Glen Lake Senior qualified for the Footlocker National Championships, December 9 at Balboa Park in San Diego, California. Dathan Ritzenhein's 14:29, set in 1999 in Orlando, is still the Footlocker Cross Country record.

The Midwest Regionals include individuals from Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota and Wisconsin. The following athletes finished in the top 25 at Footlocker Midwest Regionals, but failed to qualify for the National race:

Bekah Smeltzer, 11th, Monroe, 18:08

Carly Green, Milford, 17th, 18:27

Meggan Freeland, Albion, 20th, 18:29

Bobby Aprill, Dexter, 13th, 15:30

Maverick Darling, Ovid, 20th, 15:36

__/ TOM HENDERSON IS SIGNING BOOKS AT BORDERS, BIRMINGHAM, TONIGHT - Michigan Runner columnist Tom Henderson writes true crim books about Michigan cases. Tom is signing his latest book this evening at Borders, 34300 Woodward, Birmingham, 7:00 pm. Tom's books include "Darker Than Night" about the case of two deer hunters from metro Detroit who disappeared in 1985; "A Deadly Affair", about a judge, a lawyer and the lawyer's pregnant wife; and "Blood Justice", about the murders of a music professor and an airline flight attendant.

__/ DEXTER CROSS COUNTRY TEAM DECLINES NIKE TEAM NATIONALS - This coming weekend, Saturday, December 2, the Nike Team Nationals will be held for the third year in Portland, Oregon. The concept behind the Nike Team Nationals is that cross country racing is a team sport. Nike uses the rankings created by Mark Bloom, Editor and Publisher of "The Harrier, High School Cross Country Report" to help determine the best cross country teams to invite. Among the twenty teams invited was the Dexter Dreadnaughts. Although MHSAA rules prevent Dexter from accepting the invitation, we'd like to congratulate Bobby Avrill, Dan Jackson, Jason Bishop, Ryan Neely, Ben Steavenson, Andrew Martin, Alex Hess, Coach Jaime Dudash and the rest of the Dreadnaughts on their nationally-ranked season.

__/ MRN ON THE ROAD, DETROIT - We congratulate Doug Kurtis and the rest of the team who put on the Fifth Third Bank Thanksgiving Turkey Trot. It was everything a race should be: well organized, fun, and memorable. We tried the first-ever Stuffing Strut 5K and hope the new distance continues. The 5K distance is another post-season opportunity for high school and college cross country runners to be part of the road-racing scene. The additional 5K distance is also good for families who can choose from the 10K, the 5K or the 1 Mile. One example is Frank Guastella of St. Clair, President of the Michigan Golf Course Owners Association. Frank's 12 year old daughter Kelley ran the 5K while Frank ran the traditional 10K. Kelley runs to stay in shape for her favorite sport, basketball.

__/ MORE NCAA CROSS COUNTRY - We missed an individual qualifier for the NCAA Division I Cross Country Finals earlier this month. We thank Mike Unger for alerting us to this omission. Laura Rolf finished the 6K championship race in 21:32-- a terrific 41st in the field of 253.

"Jennie, In the women's Great Lakes Regional, Laura Rolf from Valparaiso finished 3rd overall. She is a graduate of Rochester Hills, Lutheran Northwest and has qualified for the NCAA DI Nationals also. Thanks, Mike Unger"

__/ MOEN AND SHEEHAN HELP USA TO BRONZE AT CHIBA EIKEDEN "CHIBA, Japan (Nov. 23, 2006) - The Team USA men raced to third place at the Hanji Aoki Cup 2006 International Chiba Ekiden Thursday in Chiba, Japan. Finishing in 2:01:56, the team tied the highest U.S. finish ever at the event. Kenya won the men's title for the second year in a row, finishing in 1:57:58.

The six-person relay team was led off by former William and Mary All- American Ed Moran who ran his 5 km leg in 13:34 to finish fifth on his leg. By the end of the second leg, Kenya was in full control of the race with their sights on the world record for the marathon relay. Andrew Carlson completed the 10 km in 29:02, the sixth fastest time for the leg, moving the U.S into fourth place.

Team USA athletes Fasil Bizuneh and Josh Moen each turned in solid performances, running the second fastest times for their respective 5 km and 10 km legs. Bizuneh's 13:50 moved Team USA from fifth to within striking distance of third. As a sub-par run by Sammy Korir would ultimately lead the Kenyan team to fall 52 seconds short of the record, Moen's 29:23 on the 10 km leg was good to take over third place.

During the fifth leg, Patrick Tarpy managed to maintain the U.S. hold on third place, running his hilly 5 km leg in 14:47 before handing off to Ryan Sheehan, who would run the 7.2 km leg in 21:21 to bring Team USA home with their second consecutive bronze medal. The USA women finished tenth in 2:23:20." -- USA Track and Field
