__/ HURRICANE EVACUEES THANK YOU - When Running Network
colleagues from Texas asked the running community to come to the aid
of the thousands of people displaced after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita
events, clubs, stores, universities and individuals responded. Lance
Phegley, Loren Sheffer and others at Inside Texas Running and
Runner, Triathlete News delivered more than 50,000 items of clothing to
those most in need. We in Michigan did our part: Bay Area Running
Club, Cornerstone University, Detroit Newspapers, Huron Valley YMCA,
Monroe (MI) Milers, Northwood University and this Newsletter were
among those cited by Inside Texas Running for supporting the drive.
__/ WOMEN WILL RUN STEEPLECHASE IN BEIJING - We're excited
about this news:
"The International Olympic Committee accepted an IAAF (International
Association of Athletics Federations) request to include the women's
3,000m steeplechase at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China.
The inaugural Olympic women's steeplechase will occur during the 20th
year of women's international steeplechase competition. The women's
steeplechase was included at a World Outdoor Championships for the
first time earlier this summer in Helsinki, Finland, where Docus Inzikuru
of Uganda won the gold medal in 9 minutes, 18.24 seconds. Four-time
U.S. champion Elizabeth Jackson was the fastest American in the final,
placing ninth in 9:46.72.
For more information on the women's steeplechase being added to the
Olympic program, visit http://www.iaaf.org."

__/ MRN ON THE ROAD
- GRAND RAPIDS - Our hearty congratulations go to Don Kern,
Running Circles, and the volunteers for the amazing second running of
the Grand Rapids Marathon. Packet pick-up, pasta dinner, start and
finish were all located at the spiffy new YMCA downtown near the
museums, hotels and the Grand River. The course along the Kent Trails,
Millenium Park and streets closed to traffic was glowing with Fall colors.
More than 1400 ran, walked or wheeled the marathon or half marathon
course.
-- DETROIT - We visited Detroit to honor Rosa Parks twice this week:
once to the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History. (By
the way, do make time to visit this wonderful museum; it's a beautiful
space with interesting and compelling exhibits.) We returned
Wednesday to the Greater Grace Temple and Woodlawn Cemetery
where Detroit turned out in force for "Mother Parks" homecoming. We'll
have a Michigan Travel TV show about this event later on this month. In
the meantime, we're pleased to pass on Coach Bob Park's story
inspired by Rosa Parks.
__/ COACH BOB PARKS ON ROSA PARKS
"Rosa Parks (no relation, but I would like to claim her) died this
week. She was a great person who wouldn't give up her seat in a
segregated Alabama in 1955 and brought about the elimination of
segragation in the south. She was a Detroit resident.
Former Pres. Bill Clinton, at her funeral, said that he and his white
friends could then sit in the back of the bus if they so desired.
This brought back memories of 1952 when five of us on the EMU (then
MSNC) team, Bill Perry, Glenn Davis, Bruce Jacobs, Marv Staplin and I
decided to go south for spring vacation and run in the Southern Relays
in Birmingham, Ala. We drove cars from the auto plants at Willow Run
for some Alabama dealers and headed south in a caravan. It was quite
an experience. We drove Kaisers, Fraziers, and Henry J's, three long-
obsolete models (if I had a lot of money, I would now buy one for an
antique car collection in commemoration of our historic trip). When we
got to Alabama, we piled into a bus and sat in the rear seat. The bus
didn't move and everyone was looking at five white boys sitting in the
back end.
Finally the driver came back and told us to move or he would call the
police. I guess we could have been like Rosa Parks and stay put, but we
had no desire to be thrown in a southern jail in those days, so we moved
up toward the front after daring the driver to eject us. The blacks then
moved to the back of the bus and smiled at us for our affrontary actions
toward the driver."
__/ LAST PLACE WINNER - At the Grand Rapids Marathon we met
Marcia Crosby of Hesperia. At the age of 61, not an athlete, Marcia read
about a training program to walk the Marine Corps marathon and
decided she could do it. Alas, the Marine Corps's 15 pace limit was not
for her. Then she found the GR marathon close to home and on the
same day. She followed the training program which combined
speedwork (walk as fast as you possibly can for 20 minutes), cross-
training (aerobics), and weekly long walks, including 2 20 milers).
Marcia lowered her pace from 23 minutes per mile to 16:30. Just from
the walking, Marcia lost 50 pounds and found energy she'd never had
before. Marcia's husband joined her for the long walks and benefited
from her training, too. I didn't see Marcia after about mile 3, but she'd put
in the training and was absolutely determined to finish. She did: 8:41:07.
__/ ATTENTION RACE DIRECTORS: EXTENDING AGE GROUP
AWARDS - Doug Kurtis sent us this note which will be of interest to all
race directors:
"Last month I had a pleasant conversation with James Lovat, who won
our 75 and over age group in the 2004 Turkey Trot. He was eighty years
old then. While talking to him I realized how simple it is to have five
year age groups for everyone that enters a race. An event scoring team
can easily add categories at no extra cost. There is no need to buy
extra awards for every possible age group. About twenty percent of most
races awards go unclaimed. If engraving is required, organizers can
order a percentage without an inscription and let the winner add it later."
__/ GREAT PERFORMANCES
-- Michigan women won Big 10 fourth straight year and Coach Karen
Harvey's Illinois team placed second. Michigan's top runner, Alyson
Kohlmeier was named to the Big Ten First Team.
