__/ TIM BROE IS ON THE MEND - US 5000 meter champion
Tim Broe is recovering from foot surgery and hopes to
resume running in a few weeks. Tim won that title running
with a broken foot and an injured back. Tim will continue
training with Ron Warhurst in Ann Arbor with the 2004
Athens Olympics 5000 meter event in his sight. The
three-time All-American steeplechaser will not be
competing in the steeplechase this year per doctor's orders.
__/ MICHIGAN WOMEN WIN BIG TEN X-C TITLE - University
of Michigan sophomore Rebecca Walters led the Michigan
women to the Big Ten Cross Country title on Sunday,
beating host second place Michigan State women. Spartan
assistant coach Kyle Baker was disappointed, but hoping
that Spartan women would better their showing at the Great
Lakes Regionals. Mike McGuire was named Big Ten Coach
of the Year.
As expected, powerhouse Wisconson won the Big Ten
men's title, without 2002 Big Ten champion, Matt
Tegenkamp. Michigan men took second, led by second
place Nate Brannen, seventh Tom Greenless and eighth
Nick Willis. Brannen kicked his way past seven runners in
the final stretch. Individual champion Simon Bairu of
Wisconsin was the only one he didn't catch.
__/ EMOTIONAL MHSAA LP X-C FINALS - Saturday's Lower
Peninsula Cross Country Finals at the Michigan
International Speedway in Brooklyn had dramatic races and
several emotional endings.Three time Division 3 girls

second to last (29:29). Her friend, Jaime Watson of
Allendale, ran 18:12 to be the 2003 champion. Saline's
Dustin Voss ran for his mother Bonnie, who died in August,
just before the season began. Voss's winning time of 14:54
is the third-fastest time in Michigan history. Division 1
Clarkston girls ended the domination of Rockford to take the
team title. Seth Thibodeau led the way to Division 1 Milford's
state title. Dexter Boys took the Division 2 title for the second
year and Stephan Shay, Central Lake (15:35) took the
individual Division 4 boys title over 2002's winner, Liam
Boylan-Pett, Bath (15:50).
