======================================================= ============= GRAND ISLAND TRAIL MARATHON GETS THE NATIONAL ATTENTION IT DESERVES ======================================================= ============= Race Director Jeff Crumbaugh sent us this good news: "Munising, Mich - Michigan's Grand Island Trail Marathon will be featured in an article by Bob Cooper in Runner's World (January 2008, p 82). The article features ten top new marathons in the U.S. started since 2002. The beauty of the course, the Patagonia Silkweight shirts given to finishers, and the hand blown glass medallions awarded to the top three in each age group are highlighted. The article, titled Fresh Starts, is part of RW's Marathon Guide 2008.

"The article coincides with the release of Rich Sosa's new film, Water, Soul, Earth, & Feet: A Story of the 2007 Grand Island Trail Marathon. Inspired by the 2006 coverage by Michigan Runner's Scott Sullivan and Carter Sherline (http://michiganrunner.tv/2006grandisland/) race director Jeff Crumbaugh contacted Sosa, a film director from Racine, Wisconsin based Pozole Films. The film features remarkable cinematography, participant stories, and the competition itself. The movie is currently entered in eight national film competitions. View the trailer and purchase DVDs of the film at http://www.polzolefilms.com. The 2008 edition of the Grand Island Trail Marathon will be held on July 26. Registration is now open at http://www.greatlakesendurance.com.

======================================================= ============= REGISTER EARLY AND SAVE: RITE AID CLEVELAND MARATHON & HALF MARATHON ======================================================= ============= Marathoners and half-marathoners who register by January 10 can save $20.00. Marathoners who register by that date will also receive an early bird gift. Those who register for the 10K by January 10 can save $10.00. Cleveland is one of our favorite nearby destinations. ======================== FOOTLOCKER MIDWEST VIDEO ======================== Thank-you's to Andrew Ludke, who alerted us to the Footlocker Midwest video: "This video may be of interest to the running community. It shows Bobby Aprill of Dexter finishing and getting cut off at the finish line."

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aPRdlx46joU&eurl=http:// footlockercc.com/2007/midwest_multimedia.shtml

Maverick Darling, Katie Haines and Meggan Freeland will compete in the Footlocker Cross Country Championships Saturday in San Diego. FSN will broadcast an hour-long special on Monday, December 17 and the Website promises a live Webcast: http://www.footlockercc.com/

======================================================= = MICHIGAN RUNNERS OF THE YEAR WILL BE ANNOUNCED JANUARY 1 ======================================================= = For the last several years, Michigan Runner magazine has announced the Michigan Runners of the Year in the January/February issue. In 2008, because the U.S. Olympic Team Trials, Men's Marathon took place in November 2007, the magazine will feature the Michigan Runners of the Year in the March/April 2008 issue. We'll announce Michigan Runners of the Year, Masters Runners of the Year, Senior Runners of the Year and Contributor of the Year on January 1, 2008.

======================================================= ================ PREVIEW: USATF CLUB CROSS COUNTRY NATIONALS, WEST CHESTER, OHIO, DEC. 8 ======================================================= ================ This is the weekend to head for Ohio for the the USATF Club Cross Country Nationals. It's seldom that this race is close enough for a drive and this year the Michigan contingent is loaded.

Last year Michigan's Front Line Racing team won the Men's Master's race and Michigander Tracy Lokken took first. The Men's Master's champion team is returning to defend their title and this year Fred Vanhala has recruited top-notch talent for the Women's Masters, Men's Open, Women's Open, Men's Master's 50+ and 60+. Look for Tortoise and Hare's Monica Joyce and Front Line Racing Team's Laurie Decker to be in the lead pack for the Women's Masters.

The race course at Voice of America Park is spectator-friendly, just 3 hours and 40 minutes from Southeast Michigan and a quick 1.5 miles from Interstate 75. For the schedule, meet history and status of entries, see http://www.usatf.org/events/2007/USATFClubXCChampionships/

==================================== RUNNING USA IS LOOKING FOR A NEW CEO ==================================== The running industry association, Running USA, is looking for a new CEO now that Basil Honikman is retiring. Among the interesting details of the job description is the location: "Flexibility allows for this position to be located in any city where this person can work from home." We'd like to see a new CEO expand Running USA's elite athlete program beyond the very successful Mammoth Lakes, California program. Job description: http://www.runningusa.org/about/ceo.shtml

======================================================= ========== SHARON DOLAN, DOUG GOODHUE NAMED AGE DIVISION RUNNERS OF THE YEAR ======================================================= ========== At its annual meeting in Honolulu, USATF announced Long Distance Running Awards. Doug Goodhue of Milford and Sharon Dolan of Westphalia swept the Masters Age Division Runners of the Year awards in the 65-69 age group. What does it take to win this award? Sharon Dolan set the American age-group 5000 meter track record of 22:38 in July; she also ran a 21:26 5K at Ele's Race on July 22. Doug Goodhue set the American age-group 5K road race record, 18:15, at Red October on October 6.

Edmund Devine won the Paul Spangler Award for the outstanding Masters Long Distance Running athlete in the oldest age category. Devine, an Ann Arbor resident, finished the Big House Big Heart 5K in 46:38 at the age of 91. The award is named for Dr. Paul Spangler who set many age group records and who competed until his death at the age of 94.

Debbie Topham of Mayville won the Masters Race Walker of the Year in the 50-54 age group. Debbie's won her age group and finished 11th at the USATF Open/Masters 5K Racewalk Championships in 28:16, 9:06 pace.

=================================================== KATIE MCGREGOR WILL MEET AND GREET JUNIOR OLYMPIANS =================================================== Katie McGregor, along with Daniel Lincoln, will be a special guest at the 2007 USATF National Junior Olympic Cross Country Championships presented by Finish Line this weekend in Lawrence, Kansas. The duo will be on hand to sign autographs, cheer the runners on, and participate in the commencement awards ceremonies. The event will be December 8 at Rim Rock Farm in Lawrence, Kansas.

McGregor won the 1998 NCAA cross country title at Rim Rock Farm, competing for the University of Michigan. McGregor was the 2005 USA 10,000m champion and has represented Team USA many times, including four appearances at the World Cross Country Championships. "It's a tough course, and it was fun to think of all the history there," said McGregor of the Rim Rock Farm terrain. -- From a USATF press release http://www.usatf.org/events/2007/ USATFJuniorOlympicXCChampionships/

======================================================= ======== DETROIT WILL HOST USA YOUTH TRACK & FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS IN 2009 ======================================================= ======== Detroit is among the sites selected at the USATF Annual Meeting. Detroit will host the USA Youth Track & Field Championships in 2009. The date has not yet been announced, but the event typically takes place in late June or early July.

=============================== MRN ON THE ROAD - MT. PLEASANT ============================== We were in Mt. Pleasant for the Michigan Golf Course Owners Association Annual meeting and had chance to catch up with Sherlyn Everly, race director of the Crim, 1999 - 2004. Sherlyn now heads the non-profit Industrial Mutual Association (IMA) which offers a broad range of recreational facilites and programs, including the 18 hold Brookwood Golf Club in Burton. In addition to her energy and enthusiasm, we appreciated the national exposure Sherlyn brought to Michigan running and the development of running programs for kids during her years at the Crim.
