__/ RUN LIKE THE DICKENS 5K RUN AND WALK AND TINY TIM TROT - "Looking for something different to do this holiday season? Well, lace lup your shoes, grab the kids, and come run or walk the Run Like the Dickens 5K or the Tiny Tim Trot (for kids 12 and under) on Saturday, December 13. New this year, the Run will take you 3.1 miles through beautiful Holly, including the historic downtown, in all its Dicken's Olde Fashioned Chrismas splendor! Register in the gym of the Holly Area Schools Karl Richter Campus at 920 East Baird Street. The 5K starts at 9:00 am; the Tiny Tim Trot will be run on the track at 10:00 am. Proceeds will support the Holly High School Track Team and the Presenting Sponsor is Pulte Homes. Immediately following the race, the Dicken's Old Fashioned Christmas Festival parade will take off from the Karl Richter Campus. For more information call Rob Basydlo, 248.328.3200, ext. 5279."

__/ MICHIGAN RUNNER TV: LAKE SUPERIOR SHORE RUN RACE AGAINST TOBACCO, SEPT. 20 - If you are looking for a scenic, challenging run, look no farther than the Lake Superior Shore Run Race Against Tobacco. The half-marathon and 5K are held each September, north of Marquette in Michigan's Upper Penninsula. Our cameras caught a beautiful September day and the stunning scenery of Lake Superior.

__/ QUOTE OF THE WEEK - "The world won't follow USATF's lead [zero tolerance drug policy]. It can't. In far too many countries, including the United States, such a penalty would not hold up in court. There might be limited successful application of the rule, but it would be prohibitively costly both in time and money. It's not a practical solution to the doping problem. It is, however, an excellent solution to USATF's public relations problem."

-- Jeff Hollobaugh, "USATF puts spin on drug war", ESPN Olympic Sports, December 9, 2003,

http://espn.go.com/oly/columns/hollobaugh/1682166.html

__/ WESTERN MICHIGAN COULD ELIMINATES MEN'S TRACK, CROSS COUNTRY - At the Trustees meeting scheduled for 8:00 am, Friday, December 12, Western Michgian trustees will consider eliminating four varsity sports - synchronized skating and men's indoor and outdoor track and cross country. Mid-American Conference schools which have already eliminated men's track or cross-country are Ball State, Marshall, Bowling Green, and Toledo.

In a related, unfortunate, sign of the times, USATF named Bob Fraley, Fresno State Director of Track and Field, Nike Coach of the Year. Fraley gave up his annual salary to save his program from elimination.

(But what happens when he retires?)

__/ CHANNEL TO CHANNEL 20K 2004 NEEDS A DIRECTOR - "The Catherine Porter 2004 Channel to Channel 20K has been cancelled. Due to having to move I will not be able to direct the 2004 Channel to Channel 20K. If anybody? wants to take on the 2004 Channel to Channel please contact me. I will maintain this web page and do plan on directing the 2005 Channel to Channel."

-- Ron Blamer, http://channeltochannel.com, rblamer@chartermi.net

__/ USATF 2003 AWARDS - At the annual Awards Breakfast on Saturday, December 6, USATF announced the 2003 awards winners for their contributions on and off the track.
