individual titles. MRTV also talks with 2003 Great Lakes Regional

__/ MOTOR CITY STRIDERS RALLY
HUNTINGTON WOODS (12/8/04) -- Ed and Sue Kozloff had thought to
retire from the race directing business with the close of the 2004 season.
They didn't count on Maureen (Mo) Meldrum. Meldrum, race director of
the 25,000 Komen Race for the Cure, Detroit, wasn't above begging Ed
and Sue to reconsider.
The Motor City Strider membership, who turned out in large numbers for
the club's annual meeting at Huntington Woods Library Wednesday
evening, agreed with Mo. Ed, Sue and club officers did reconsider.
The club amended its constitution to lengthen officers' terms from 1
year to 5. Members then reelected President Ed Kozloff (30 years), Vice
President Tom Fraser (14 years), Vice President Carroll DeWeese (11
years), Treasurer Ken Paczkowski (10 years), and Secretary Brett
Sanborn (1 year) for 5 year terms.
There was much other interesting business, but we'll mention only the
following: the Club established and funded the Jim Ramsay
scholarships-- 2 scholarships for members of Detroit high school cross
country teams. The club presented an award to Keith and Kevin Hanson
for their outstanding contributions to the national running community.
Tracy Rizer and Brett Sanborn were named Club Champions for
having won the most Motor City Striders races.
Keith McClellan's "The Hero Within Us; a History of Track & Field
in the Twentieth Century from a Michigan Perspective" was a very
popular door prize for a couple of dozen happy runners.
__/ HANSONS-BROOKS MEN ARE RUNNERS-UP AT USATF CLUB
CHAMPIONSHIPS
The two-time defending champions Hansons-Brooks Distance Project
men took second place at Saturday's National Club Cross Country meet
in Portland, Oregon, behind the first-place Farm Team and ahead of 39
other elite teams. Josh Eberly (33:50), Clint Verran (34:06), Nick Allen
(34:12), Trent Briney (34:31) and Jacob Frey (34:33) scored for the
Hanson-Brooks men. 2002 NCAA D1 XC champion Jorge Torres
(32:43) is the individual men's champion, and Melissa Buttry (23:07)
successfully defended her individual women's title.
See Jane Run (love the team name) of Southern California won the
women's team title. Former Central Michigan runner Mari Chandler
(24:59) scored for the second place Farm Team.
__/ HOLIDAY GIFTS FOR RUNNERS
We have lots of ideas for the runners on your list:
-- FIFTH THIRD RIVER BANK RUN
"Get your shopping done in a split at 53 riverbankrun.com". Click on
"" to order a race entry and training T-shirt package, a 2005
Fifth Third River Bank Run Desk/Wall Calendar, or a variety of
gift baskets. "Very merry" prices are valid through Dec. 30, 2004.
-- TOM HENDERSON'S BLOOD JUSTICE
Michigan Runner and Detroit News columnist Tom Henderson also
writes true-crime thrillers. I found the story involving a couple of murders
in Flint and Romulus to be absolutely riveting. One of the suspects
was a member of Detroit's Downtown Runners club. "Blood Justice" is
published by St. Martin's Press and is available at bookstores and at
http://amazon.com.
-- A SUBSCRIPTION TO MICHIGAN RUNNER
Michigan Runner magazine has a Holiday Special subscription offer:
$30 for 3 years (save $5)/$44 in Canada

-- CHRIS LEAR'S RUNNING WITH THE BUFFALOES
The Colorado Buffaloes swept the NCAA Division I Cross Country
Championships this year. Michigan's Kalin Toedebusch andn Amber
Smith are running with the current Buffaloes, and former Buffalo, Dathan
Ritzenhein, won the 2003 individual title. Take a look inside the
Buffaloes with Chris Lear's Running with the Buffaloes, available at
bookstores and at http://amazon.com.
-- FIVE THOUSAND METERS; NOTHING COMES EASY - DVD

LITTLE PROFESSOR BOOK STORE HITS THE FINISH LINE
This past Sunday, the Little Professor Book Store in Dearborn, will
close its doors after 43 years in service, with many of those years
carrying the Michigan Runner Magazine. Tony Fera, owner, was an
early advocate of the Michigan Runner. I remember when we first
started publishing I had sent his story 25 copies of the MR, a week after
he got them he said he was sold out and asked for 50 more. It was a
great order for a new publication and obviously, one I have not
forgotten. The Little Professor Book Store in Dearborn, was one of the
great magazine and book stores in Michigan. Thanks for the memories,
Tony. Art McCafferty

__/ LOCAL LITTLE KNOWN RACE IN MID-MICHIGAN
By Jennifer Tebedo, faux runner
When the cold November race started I was in front with the lean
runners cutting through the frigid air. Quickly I started to tire and
decided if I didn't let them pass I might not finish at all. As each runner
passed I had to accept the fact that I didn't enter to beat anyone
to the finish. My goals changed during the race. At first I wanted
to win an award, soon I just wanted to keep the power walkers behind
me, and ultimately it was just about crossing the finish line.
The first year I took the easy way out and walked the 5K event.
This was the year I said that I was going to run. It wasn't about
time or placing, instead I just wanted to finish. Over the past
year I worked out at the gym and lost 35 pounds, but still didn't
do a lot of running. I decided that no matter what happened I was
going to get out there and run. Besides if my entire body aches
later on, that's all right this too shall pass.
Each year the Bay Area Runners Club hosted a wonderful little race
each November in Bay City, at the local vocational training center.
Two years ago as my world changed this very race became an
important part of my plans. You see it was at that point my father, Don
Dansereau, lost his battle to cancer. He was the assistant principal
of that school, the Bay Arenac Career Center, and the local runners
club renamed their annual event in his honor. Thus, the Don
Dansereau Memorial 5K Run & Walk was established, and I had to
be there.

__/ MRN ON THE ROAD - SOUTHFIELD, MICHIGAN
We stopped by Total Runner in Southfield Saturday and had the good
luck to find both Dave Howell (proprieter) and Paul Aufdemberge
(manager).
We wondered what new products were hot at Total Runner and
managed to leave with one ourselves: the Forerunner 201 GPS sensor.
For those of us who like to keep track of our miles and also like to run on
trails, this is a really fun way to keep track. It also features a Virtual
Partner" which "always completes the goal you set. Your job is to keep
up with your Virtual Partner."
Paul is looking forward to competing in the Fifth Third River Bank Run
as a brand-new master this year. The three-time Michigan Runner of the
Year will turn 40 on December 30.
