======================================================= =================== NEW YEAR'S EVE FAMILY FUN RUN AND WALK TO CELEBRATE 38 YEARS ON BELLE ISLE ======================================================= =================== Since 1970 kids in Michigan have been getting their first experience running a race in the New Year's Eve Family Fun Run and Walk on Belle Isle in Detroit. Every kid who finishes the one mile race gets a trophy to go along with the memory. It's not unusual to see three generations participating in the one mile run or walk, the 4 mile run or walk or both.

This year, Fifth Third Bank, with a track record of supporting memorable Michigan races, is presenting sponsor for this traditional event. Belle Isle, Detroit's historic island park designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, has undergone a recent face lift. Belle Isle Runners host and Jeanne Bocci, as she has from the beginning, directs. Events are Monday, December 31, 2007 at Belle Isle Casino. Children's 1 Mile Run/Walk and Open 1 Mile Run / Walk are at 3:00 pm; 4 Mile Race Walk and Fitness Walk begin at 3:05 pm; 4 Mile Run is at 4:00 pm. ======================================================= ============ MICHIGAN RUNNER TV: USATF NATIONAL CLUB CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS ======================================================= ============ Tough and talented Michigan runners made a great showing on the slippery and muddy course at Voice of America Park in West Chester, Ohio. Front Line Racing Team's took the Masters Women's title and the Masters Men's 60+ title. Front Line Racing Team's Tracy Lokken was second in the Masters Men's race and Tortoise and Hare's Monica Joyce was 11th in the Open Women's race.

USATF doesn't let us video the race, so Michigan Runner TV is presenting three interviews. All three are on youtube.com. Search "USATF Club Cross Country 2007"

1) Fred Vanhala, Front Line Racing Team on Open Men's / Open Women's: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_V_NfvKjqLU

2) Laura Murphy, Front Line Racing Team, 1st runner on Champion Masters Women's team: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xOaBgozB3I8

3) Tracy Lokken, Front Line Racing Team, 2nd Masters Men and defending Masters Men's Champion: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v= yYuFK8WVU1w

======================================================= ==================== MAVERICK DARLING NAMED 2ND TEAM ALL AMERICAN AT FOOTLOCKER XC CHAMPIONSHIPS ======================================================= ==================== Maverick Darling's 15:23 was good for 10th overall in the competitive field at the Footlocker Cross Country Championships, Balboa Park in San Diego on December 3. Darling, an Ovid-Elsie senior, helped the Midwest Boys to the team championship and and he was named All- American on the second team.

Katie Haines, Rockford, finished 26th (18:35) in the field of 38; according to the Footlocker Web site, Haines was happy with her race: "I was almost in last place at the mile and I worked my way up." Junior Meggan Freeland, Albion, finished 32nd in 18:47. Results: http://footlockercc.com

=================================================== NO HEAT THE STREETS IN 2008; HOPE TO RETURN IN 2009 =================================================== Race Direcctor Stephen Moran told Michigan Runner that Heat the Streets, the popular February race in Detroit will not be held in 2008. Moran hopes that Heat the Streets Run & Walk for Warmth will return in 2009. The race has raised funds to help folks with those tough winter heating bills.

======================================= NAVIGATION CLINICS FOR ADVENTURE RACING ======================================= For anyone interested in adventure racing and wanting to improving those navigation skills, several clinics are on the Winter agenda. Infiterra Sports and REI are sponsoring clinics in Troy, Northville How to Get Started in Adventure Racing Clinic - December 13 (today), REI Troy Basic Navigation for Adventure Racing Clinic, - January 30, REI Northville Basic & Advanced Navigation for Adventure Racing - February 21, REI Troy How to Get Started in Adventure Racing Clinic - March 19, REI Northville For details on each clinic see http://infiterrasports.com.

==================================== MRN ON THE ROAD - WEST CHESTER, OHIO ==================================== Having the USATF National Club Cross Country Championships in nearby Ohio certainly helped the turnout from Michigan. In addition to the large representation from Front Line Racing Team, other Michigan teams were Playmakers, Ann Arbor Track Club, Tortoise and Hare, and Running Fit's North Wind Running Club. Among the spectators was Michigan Runner columnist Scott Hubbard and legendary announcer for many Michigan races and track meets. We wish Scott had been announcing this race. Complete results:

==================================== FOLLOWING THE TRAIL OF BROKEN HEARTS ==================================== Sports Illustrated online has a detailed and informative article on congenital cardiovascular abnormality. Althouth we still don't know exactly what happened with Ryan Shay, this article explores the issues involved. Letsrun.com alerted us to the article. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/more/12/04/broken.hearts1210/ index.html

================== GREAT PERFORMANCES ================== 1st - Laura Murphy, Laurie Decker, Krys Brish, Front Line Racing Team - First Masters Women's Team, USATF National Club XC Championships, 15 points. Laurie Decker's determined sprint at the finish caught Fleet Feet Boulder's Lesia Atkinson by half a second-- the difference between 1st and 2nd place.

1st - Doug Goodhue, Gerard Malaczynski, Wally Herrala, Front Line Racing Team, First Masters Men's Team 60+, USATF National Club XC Championships, 11 points. This team beat defending champions Raritan Valley RR by 2 points, whose 2nd runner is Runner's World's Amby Burfoot.

2nd - Tracy Lokken, Masters Men's Team, USATF National Club XC Championships. Tracy led most of the race, but got caught by Peter Magill in the last .2. Tracy was individual champion last year.

3rd - Tracy Lokken, Paul Aufdemberge, Mike Scannell, Front Line Racing Team, third Masters Men's team of 19, USATF National Club XC Championships. First place team was Fluffy Bunny. Fluffy Bunny????

11th - Monica Joyce, age 49, Tortoise and Hare, Open Women's race, USATF National Club XC Championships. Monica's time would have won the Masters Women's race.
