News that New Zealand's Arthur Lydiard had died in Texas last Saturday night stunned the running world. Lydiard was nearing the end of a two-month tour of the U.S. He coached Olympians, advised coaches, wrote books and promoted fitness through exercise for everyone. __/ MICHIGAN PREPS MAKE STRONG SHOWING AT FOOTLOCKER CROSS COUNTRY NATIONALS

The Footlocker Cross Country Nationals in San Diego, December 11 made a change in the rules which benefited two Michigan runners. Each region was able to send ten boys and ten girls this year, meaning that both Rebekah Smeltzer, 9th at the Midwest Regional, and Molly Waterhouse, 10th, were able to compete.

Overall winners were Aislinn Ryan (17:31), junior from Bellvale, New York and Ken Cormier (15:22) of Douglas, Arizona. Ohio's Jeff See (16:02), winner of the Midwest Regional and also two-time D1 winner of the Portage Invitational finished behind all three Michigan competitors.

__/ BILL RODGERS WILL SPEAK IN TRAVERSE CITY

Each January the Traverse City Track Club kicks off the running season with a major speaker. This year's featured speaker is the legendary marathoner Bill Rodgers. The date is Friday, Jan. 21, 2005 -- the night before the Traverse City Track Club's Frozen Foot Race. The admission is free and everyone is invited. __/ MOVING COMFORT GRANT WILL PROMOTE WOMEN'S FITNESS

Chantilly, VA, December 14, 2004--Moving Comfort, manufacturer of women's high performance athletic wear, will again sponsor a Women's Beginner Fitness Grant Program with grants ranging from $300 to $1,000.

"The purpose of the Women's Beginner Fitness Grant Program is to support new or existing grassroots running and walking programs that inspire women to get fit," said Moving Comfort president Ellen Wessel.
