GREAT LAKES INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD SERIES ============================================== What to do when winter weather sets in and the race calendar thins out? Well, this is the winter to try out indoor track. We're excited about a brand-new indoor series: The Great Lakes Indoor Track and Field Series (GLITS). The Mt. Morris Track Club created the series which begins January 11. Athletes enroll in the series and then can participate in some or all of the designated meets. Points are awarded for overall placings and cash prizes (albeit small cash prizes) will be awarded to the male and female with the most points. ======================================================= ============= NEW YEAR'S EVE FAMILY FUN RUN AND WALK PRESENTED BY FIFTH THIRD BANK ======================================================= ============= Here's another reason to come out for the fun and traditions of Southeast Michigan's last race of the year: race director Jeanne Bocci indicates that New Year's Eve Family Fun Run and Walk are planning to give commemorative awards to all participants. All the kids participating in the 1 Mile Fun Run already get a trophy to take home. Many folks create their own traditions; look for Tom Henderson's head gear and others wearing costumes. ========================= MRN ON THE ROAD - DETROIT ========================= I imagine many people were surprised to see Detroit among the New York Times 53 places to visit in 2008. Most of the 53 places were exotic international places. Detroit's draw included the recently renovated Detroit Insitute of Arts and two new casino hotels. As runners who frequent Detroit for races such as the Fifth Third Bank Thanksgiving Day Turkey Trot, the St. Patrick's Parade Corktown Races, the Detroit Free Press / Flagstar Marathon, and the New Year's Eve Family Fun Run and Walk, we agree with the New York Times that Detroit is a worthy destination. Justin says that several runners in southwest Michigan have noticed that the Gillette's are often overlooked by Michigan Runner. We do admit to some bias when checking results; Michigan races get most of our attention and the Gillettes did all of their marathon racing outside of Michigan this year.
