__/ QUOTE OF THE WEEK
"On June 24 [1966], I went to Constitution Hall to hear Ray Charles
sing... We sat near the back of the balcony and were among the tiny
minority of white peopole there.
I had loved Ray Charles since I heard his great line from "What'd I
Say": "Tell your mama, tell your pa, I'm gonna send you back to
Arkansas." By the end of the concert Ray had the audience dancing in
the aisles. When I got back to Potomac Avenue that night, I was so
excited I couldn't sleep. At 5 a.m., I gave up and went for a three mile
run. I carried the ticket stub from that concert in my wallet for a decade."
-- Bill Clinton, "My Life," p. 107.
__/ GLSP INTERNET TV: "FIVE THOUSAND METERS" PLAYS IN
PEORIA
Great Lakes Sports Publications travelled to the historic Apollo Fine
Arts and Entertainment Centre in Peoria, Illinois for the world premiere
of the movie "Five Thousand Meters: Nothing Comes Easy". Producer
Carl Leivers and Director Brennan Galloway follow nine runners who
were hoping to earn a place on the U.S. Olympic Team in Athens.
Dathan Ritzenhein, Mark Menefee and Tim Broe are among
the athletes featured in the movie.

__/ MICHIGAN IS SENDING THREE TO FOOTLOCKER CROSS
COUNTRY NATIONALS ON DEC. 11
Experience counted. John Black, Justin Switzer, Daniel Roberts and
Bekah Smeltzer all were returning to the Footlocker Cross Country
Midwest Regionals in Kenosha, Wisconsin, for another chance at the
Footlocker Cross Country National race in San Diego.
John Black, a senior from Bloomfield Hills, was a surprise 4th in
15:34. Justin Switzer, the Waterford Kettering senior who finished 27th
at Footlocker Nationals in 2003, finished 3 seconds later for a 5th place
finish and a return trip to San Diego. Vicksburg's Daniel
Roberts finished in 15:42 for his first trip to the national race.
Bekah Smeltzer's 18:24 was a fine time in the muddy conditions, but her
ninth place finish is good only for an alternate spot. The Monroe,
Michigan, sophomore and Lower Peninsula Division II champion still
has two more years and chances to make the trip. No Michigan
girls finished in the coveted top 8. Jeff See, Ohio and 2 time winner
of the Portage Invite, won the Boys race. Ramsey Kaven of South
Dakota won the girls race in 17:25.

__/ MRN ON THE ROAD - PEORIA, ILLINOIS THE MOVIE
Drove six hours to Peoria, Illinois for the World Premiere of "Five
Thousand Meters, Nothing Comes Easy." We stayed at the Hotel Pere
Marquette (National Register of Historic Places), about two blocks from
the also-historic Apollo Theater. A white-stretch limo
conveyed us the two blocks to the theater.
Why Peoria? Home-town Olympian Tim Broe was one of the athletes
featured in the movie. The crowd included producer Carl Leivers,
director Brennan Galloway, screenwriter/consultant Chris Lear, Illinois
cross country coach Karen Harvey and her husband, Olympian Kevin
Sullivan, Steamboat Classic Director Phil Lockwood. Steve
Shostrum, owner of Running Central and the founder of the Steamboat
Classic, was the evening's host.
Both runners and non-runners enjoyed the interviews with the athletes
and seeing uninterrupted races from beginning to end. Movies about
running are few and far between; you'll want to see this one. Although
Negative Split Pictures made the movie with an extremely low budget,
the story they tell is compelling and insightful. If you were unable to
see one of the screenings, you can order the DVD and watch the trailer
at
http://www.fivethousandmeters.com.
THE BUZZ
Kevin Sullivan will be racing at the Canadian Cross Country
Championships at Toronto's Sunnbrook Park. NCAA Division I cross
country champion Simon Bairu also will be among the
competitors at the Toronto meet.
400 meter Olympic champion Jeremy Wariner reportedly signed with
adidas for $600,000.
Per year.
Illinois women's cross country and distance coach Karen Harvey
showed that's she's just as competive a recuiter as she was an All-
American athlete at Michigan. Harvey had driven to the Footlocker
Midwest Regional earlier in the day and was very excited about some
prospects she was recruiting.
