__/ 34TH ANNUAL BELLE ISLE NEW YEAR'S EVE FAMILY FUN RUN & WALK IS TODAY - DETROIT (12/31/03) - Michigan Runner will be among those ringing out the old year on Belle Isle in Detroit. There's a one-mile fun run/walk with all kids 12 and under getting trophies, and four-mile run with post-race awards, food and drinks for all. Jeanne Bocci, who has directed this race since it started 34 years ago, donates proceeds to different charities; it will be Special Olympics this year. Kids run begins at 3:30 pm; the 4 Mile follows at 4:00 pm. Late registration and packet pick-up begin Noon today at the Bodhead Armory, 7600 Jefferson, near the MacArthur Bridge to Belle Isle. Dathan Ritzenhein wins NCAA Division I Cross Country Championship - November __/ MIKE SCANNELL IS MICHIGAN RUNNER OF THE YEAR 2003 - Michigan Runner magazine named Mike Scannell Michigan Runner of the Year 2003. The 41 year-old Grand Blanc resident moved to Michigan 3 years ago from Arizona. According to Tom Henderson's profile, Scannell cites the friendly running community of his new state for his coming out of semi-retirement as a runner.
