__/__/__/__/__/__/___/__/__/__/__/__/__/__/__/__/__/__/__/__/__/__/ __/__/ __/ RUN LIKE THE DICKENS, HOLLY, SATURDAY, DECEMBER 9 - At the 2005 Run

Like the Dickens in Holly, Ypsilanti High School cross-country runner Amy Kolin won the first 8K and enjoyed the crowd support: "I liked going through the neighborhoods. People were out on their porches cheering for us. I heard a lot of Christmas music on the course." Good cheer and fun abound at the 5K and Tiny Tim Trot, too. Events begin 9:00 am at the Karl Richter Campus in Holly. The course takes you through downtown Holly which will remind you of an old-fashioned Dickens era holiday. The race offers a family discount and free babysitting while you run. Register online: http://www.active.com/event_detail.cfm?event_id=1365706.

__/ MICHIGAN RUNNER TV: DETROIT FREE PRESS / FLAGSTAR BANK MARATHON - Our cameras feature runners on the Canadian sections of the course including the Ambassador Bridge, the Windsor waterfront, the Running Factory aid station, and heading into the Detroit / Windsor tunnel. You can also see the crowds entering the Whole Foods Health and Fitness Expo; eager folks nearly ran over Expo coordinator Bill Ewing. http://michiganrunner.tv/2006detroit/

__/ QUOTE OF THE WEEK - "Running a marathon takes guts and courage and strength and compassion and persistence."

-- Patricia Ball, Director, Detroit Free Press / Flagstar Bank Marathon, guest lecture, Eastern Michigan Sports and Events Marketing class, December 4, 2006.

__/ ERIN HUMPHREY NAMED HIGH SCHOOL ALL-AMERICAN - In its Winter 2006 issue, American Track & Field Magazine announced the 2006 Girls' High School All-American Track and Field Team selected by Andy Ferrera. Erin Humphrey, Ypsilanti Lincoln, Senior, was named to the team In the 400 Meter Dash, 2nd team. Humphrey ran a best time of 53.41 and was Michigan Lower Peninsula Division 1 Champion in the event. The complete list of both Boys' and Girls' All Americans is in American Track & Field Magazine, Volume 13, Number 6, Winter 2006. http://www.american-trackandfield.com/

__/ WINTER TRAILS DAY, JANUARY 6, FREE X-C SKI AND SNOWSHOE RENTALS - Winter Trails Day is an annual international evnt that introduces newcomers to snow sports. The 2007 event on Saturday, January 6, offers free snowshoeing and/ or cross-country skiing for children and adults new to snow sports. Rental gear is free. Three Michigan locations will host:

Cross-Country Ski Headquarters, Roscommon -

Ishpeming Al Quaal Recreation Area, Ishpeming,

__/ MORE COLLEGE CROSS COUNTRY - Tom MacNaughton alerted us to another Michigan College team which competed at the national level: "The Siena Heights University women's cross country team came in 10th at the NAIA nationals a couple of weeks ago. Their coach is Don Klienow." The harriers at the Adrian School also won their Regional. Krishawna Parker's 18:32 earned All-American honors. Congratulations to Coach Klienow, Krishawna Parker and the Saints.

__/ USA TRACK & FIELD NAMES LAURYN WILLIAMS VISA HUMANITARIAN ATHLETE OF THE YEAR - "INDIANAPOLIS - 2005 World champion Lauryn Williams, an active volunteer and benefactor of several charitable causes, has been named Visa Humanitarian Athlete of the Year by USA Track & Field. Williams was honored December 2 at the 2006 Jesse Owens Awards and Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, held at the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis, Ind. The ceremony is held in conjunction with USA Track & Field's 2006 Annual Meeting November 29-December 3 in Indianapolis. A finance graduate from the University of Miami, Williams contributes her time and resources to many charitable causes. She volunteers at Arcola Lakes Elementary School in Miami, Florida, assisting a class of deaf students who are teaching her sign language, and during the holiday season last December she donated a total of $10,000 to Miami area families who were affected by hurricanes, making it much easier for them fulfill their Christmas wishes.

Earlier this year, Williams set up a scholarship fund, the Lauryn Williams Dynamic Female Athlete Scholarship Fund, to assist emerging female athletes in their quest for academic and athletic excellence. In April, Williams introduced her Fast Flakes breakfast cereal, and a portion of the proceeds from sales go to her scholarship fund. Williams has also pledged to donate $1,000 to her scholarship fund every time she runs "sub-11" seconds in a 100-meter race.

After helping to launch the program in Miami in 2004, Williams also continues to be heavily involved in community service across the country as a part of USATF's "Be A Champion" youth outreach program promoting fitness, fair play and the benefits of physical activity. 'Lauryn embodies some of the highest values of our sport and of society,' said USATF CEO Craig Masback said. "As great of an athlete as she is, Lauryn is an even more remarkable human being. Her ability to translate her own success into making a positive influence on others is an example for all of us to follow.'

For a full bio of Lauryn Williams, visit www.usatf.org."

__/ USATF'S DISTANCE RUNNING COMMITTEE RECOGNIZES KEITH & KEVIN HANSON, GERARD MALACZYNSKI - At the annual Awards Breakfast on Saturday, December 2, USATF's distance running committees presented the Scott Hamilton Award to Keith and Kevin Hanson, a tribute to a leader in the LDR association program.

USATF Masters Long Distance Running named Gerard Malaczynski, Bloomfield Hills, the outstanding male athlete, 60-64.

__/ LAST WEEK'S TYPO - Last week we mentioned "Tom Henderson writes true crim books about Michigan cases." Laurel Park noticed and wondered,

"Great typo - was it intentional? ;-) ;-)"

-- Wish I were that clever; my computer keyboard is beginning to drop "e's".
