__/ CULPEPPER, KEFLEZIGHI, BROWNE WIN TRIALS IN
STUNNING, EMOTIONAL RACE
BIRMINGHAM, AL (2/7/04) -- The three favorites to win the
trials surprised everyone by actually finishing first, second
and third in the Olympic Team Trials, Men's Marathon
Saturday. 2000 Olympian in the 10,000 meters, Alan
Culpeppe of Lafayette, Colorado finished first in 2:11:40.
10,000 meter American record holder Meb Keflezighi of San
Diego, California, came in right behind him in 2:11:45,
and Dan Browne, the 2002 USATF Marathon Champion
from Beaverton, Oregon, clinched the third place on
the US Olympic team with a 2:12:01. Browne said he was
inspired not to let up during the last mile because he was
running not only to make the team, but for two of his West
Point classmates who died during the Iraq war. The fast
times on a cold, windy day avoided the situation in 2000,
when only the race winner, Rod Dehaven, was able to
represent the US in the Olympics because none of the
athletes met the qualifying standard. This time, the top five
finishers met the 2:15 Olympic qualifying time.
In winning the second marathon of his career and qualifying
for his second Olympic team , Culpepper won $60,000 in
prize money, with Keflezighi taking home $35,000 and
Browne pocketing $25,000 out of a total prize purse of
$193,000. For participating in the Olympic marathon in
Athens, Culpepper will earn an additional bonus of $25,000,
Keflezighi will take home $22,500 and Browne will earn
$20,000.
__/ BRIAN SELL SETS PACE FOR FAST OLYMPIC TEAM
TRIALS - Brian Sell's race plan was to run a pace that
would put him at the finish line in 2:12. He passed Teddy
Mitchell in mile 6, then held the pace and the lead through
the next 16 miles. Sell threw in 4:50 splits at miles 11 and
15 and, at one point, held a 69 second lead over the
following pack. Brian's solo running for so many miles
caught up with him as his pace fell off about mile 22 and he
eventually finished in thirteenth place in 2:17:18. Second
place finisher Meb Keflezighi credited Brian Sell for making
the race.
__/ TRENT BRINEY, CLINT VERRAN COULD GO TO
ATHENS - Trent Briney (Hansons-Brooks-in photo) held on
with the favorites and finished in fourth place with the
second fastest fourth place time in Olympic Trials history,
2:12:35 an improbable 8 minute, 36 second PR in only his
second marathon. Should any one of the top three decide to
run the 10,000 meter race in Athens or otherwise decide not
to run the Clint Verran, 11th in 2000, finished in fifth place
with an Olympic qualifying time of 2:14.37. Verran is also an
official alternate. Verran also had another role; he
represented athletes on the USATF committee that chose
Birmingham and it's criterion style course for the site of the
trials.
__/ HANSONS-BROOKS HAVE HUGE IMPACT ON TRIALS -
Ten qualifiers, eight finishers, fourth, fifth, three in the top 15
winning prize money, colorful, matching singlets, a loud,
support group coordinated by Joe Baldwin-- the running
industry and media noticed the Hansons Brooks Olympic
Distance Project. For more see
http://michiganrunner.net/news/trials_men0204.html
__/ RYAN SHAY FINISHES DESPITE HAMSTRING INJURY -
Many of us who were predicting the outcome of the
marathon trials picked Ryan Shay of East Jordan, Michigan
to finish among the top three. Shay won the 2003 USATF
Marathon Championship on the Birmingham course, but
suffered a hamstring injury a couple of weeks before the
race. Shay finished in 23rd place among 71 finishers in
2:19:18. Fifteen qualifiers started the race, but failed to
finish.

great team system. They train like the Kenyans."
-- Dan Browne, third place Olympic Team Trials, Men's
Marathon, as quoted by Amby Burfoot on
http://runnersworld.com.
__/ 4 UNDER 4 AT MEYO; WILLIS, BRANNEN, DESILETS,
THOMPSON RUN SUB-4 MILES
The Meyo Mile at Notre Dame is getting a reputation for one
of the fastest races of the indoor season. For the second
year in a row, the Meyo Mile event featured several
performances under four minutes. All four sub-four milers
met the automatic qualifying time for the NCAA Indoor
Championships. Both Willis and Brannen ran sub-four at
the same meet in 2003; Thompson and Desilets both had
good performances in 2003, but they each improved to
finish under the magic four-minute time.
1 Willis, Nick Michigan 3:56.55#
2 Brannen, Nathan Michigan 3:58.55#
3 Thompson, Gavin Eastern Michigan 3:59.05#
4 Desilets, Jordan Eastern Michigan 3:59.83#
