__/ DANCES WITH DIRT "PRE-DIRT RUN", MARCH 1, 2003
Running Fit's actual Dances with Dirt team relay and ultra races will
happen September 6, 2003, but the first DWD "Pre-Dirt Run" will be in
Hell (Pinckney), Michigan, Saturday, March 1 at 11:00 am. All those in
attendance can register for the very-popular September team event,
before online registration opens the next day, March 2. Registration is
"first come, first serve, no special favors, no emailing the Diva," says the
DWD Website. 275 teams will be allowed in. There will be a 5 mile (or
so) romp in the DWD swamp, too. Bring your snowshoes and crampons.

__/ RUNNING NETWORK TV INTERVIEWS DICK BEARDSLEY
We caught up with Dick Beardsley, one of America's great marathoners,
at the Durango Marathon in October 2002. Dick talks about his famous
race with Alberto Salazar, the Boston Marathon "Duel in the Sun," and
about his book Staying the Course. Reebok's Terry Tate, Office
Linebacker, (http://terrytate.reebok.com), makes an appearance in the
middle of the show. http://michiganrunner.tv/2003beardsley/
__/ MICHIGAN RUNNERS SHOW THEIR STUFF LAST WEEKEND:
1) SHAY WINS USA MARATHON TITLE ON 2004 TRIALS COURSE
BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA - (2/8/03). Twenty-three year old Ryan Shay
of Team USA California surged to victory at the 79th USA Men's
Marathon Championship here on the course that will - in a year - select
the 2004 U.S. Olympic Marathon team. The East Jordan, Mich. native
broke away from Kevin Collins and Clint Verran at the 24 mile mark to
win in 2:14:29.
The victory - Shay's first USA Championship - was a one second
personal best.
Collins, 31, of Craryville, N. Y., finished an unexpected national runner-
up in a personal best 2:15:32. Verran, 27, a member of Hansons Team
USA Michigan and a resident of Rochester, Mich., was third in 2:15:52.
The top three finishers earned the right to compete for the United States
in the marathon at the World Track and Field Championships in Paris
this August.
Jeff Campbell, 31, also from Hansons Team USA Michigan was fourth in
a personal best 2:16:26. Scott Strand, 34, Birmingham favorite son and
the designer of the marathon course, ran a personal best 2:16:52 for
fifth. Eight of the top ten finishers in the race notched personal bests.
By Charlie Mahler, Running USA wire.

2) FIVE RUN UNDER 4:00 AT MEYO MILE
SOUTH BEND, IND. (2/8/03) -- Notre Dame's indoor Meyo Mile was
expected to be a great race, but no one expected it to generate the five
fastest times in the world so far this year.
Notre Dame's Luke Watson led a field whose next six finishers included
five Michigan standouts. Following Watson (3:57.83) were the University
of Michigan's Nate Brannen (3:57.96), Eastern Michigan University's
Boaz Cheboiywo (3:58.07), U-M's Nick Willis (3:58.15), Nike's Ian
Connor (3:58.15), EMU's Gavin Thompson and Jordan Desilets (4:00.41
and 4:01.37 respectively).
The top four advance to the NCAA nationals thanks to their qualifying
times.
"It was one hell of a race," said U-M coach Ron Warhurst. "Before today,
the fastest time in the world in 2003 was 3:59:60. Five guys beat that in
an instant.
"We went there looking to qualify Nate (Brannen) and Nick (Willis) for
nationals and run under four minutes, and we did it. Both guys did what
they had to do and the speed of the race took over."
"You may never see something like that again," said Notre Dame coach
Joe Paine. "To see the five fastest mile times in the world in one race is
unbelievable."
__/ CORRECTION: LASALLE BANK CHICAGO MARATHON US
FINISHERS
Ryan Lamppa, always on top of the stats, sent in this correction to my
assertion last week that "Baker, Verran (Hanson's Team USA Michigan)
and Shay (Team USA California) were the 2nd, 3rd and 4th American
finishers at the 2002 LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon."
Lamppa, Media Director of the USATF Road Running Information
Center, said,
"Chicago 2002 - U.S. men
1) Khannouchi
2) Culpepper
then Baker(3), Verran (4), Keith Dowling (5) and Shay (6)"
My selective memory was working overtime. Thanks, Ryan.
