__ / HAPPY VALENTINES DAY FROM ART & JENNIE MCCAFFERTY
In checking race results for the Michigan Runner magazine feature "Best
of Times" we were struck by how many couples run. In honor of
Valentines Day, we'd like to salute Michigan's running couples--
including contributors, a couple of former Michiganders, and perhaps a
retired runner or two.
Certainly, we've missed some of you, but do send in your names and
we'll include them in a future Michigan Running News.

__/ COACH BILL SQUIRES TO VISIT SE MICHIGAN RUNNING
STORES
Last week we reported that Coach Bill Squires would be making a
speaking appearance in Michigan. We are please to report that Coach
Squires will make at least three appearances next week:
-- Monday, February 20, 7:00 pm, Total Runner, Southfield, Franklin
Plaza Shopping Center, 12 Mile & Northwestern Highway, (248) 354-
1177
-- Tuesday, February 21, 7:00 pm, Running Fit, Ann Arbor, 42 Enterprise
Drive, (734) 929-9027
-- Wednesday, February, 22, 7:00 pm, Runnin' Gear, Brighton, 9935 E
Grand River, (810) 844-0180
Of Coach Squires, Arthur Lydiard said, "Once Americans ruled the world
of marathoning. That's when Bill Squires was coaching a group of
runners in the Boston area. His group was what the Kenyans are today -
totally dominating races around the country. Coach Squires is
undoubtedly one of the greatest marathon coaches the US has ever
seen and indeed one of the best in the world."
__/ SNOWSHOES ANYONE? NY ROAD RUNNERS DIG OUT FOR
USA X-C CHAMPIONSHIPS
"After a record 27 inches of snow fell on the New York City area on
Sunday in the blizzard of '06, New York Road Runners officials are
mobilizing a small "army" to get the Van Cortlandt Park race course in
shape for this weekend's USA Cross Country Championships presented
by Gleukos.
"A Herculean effort is underway at Van Cortlandt Park. Our goal is to
clear the vast majority of snow on the race course by tomorrow evening,"
said Mary Wittenberg, president of NYRR, during a conference call on
Monday.
NYRR officials have hired a snow army of nearly 50 extra people and
mechanical snow clearing equipment, including three bobcats, to get
the Van Cortlandt Park course ready for the USA Championships on
Saturday and Sunday.
Weather reports for midweek call for warming temperatures before
dropping colder over the weekend, adding to the urgency of digging out.
"The race is on to remove the snow before it melts and potentially
refreezes as ice," said Wittenberg. "This just keeps it all interesting."
-- USA Track and Field News and Notes, vol. 7, no. 14
We were curious about the Van Cortland Park race course. Here is the
New York City Department of Parks and Recreation's own description:
"Van Cortlandt Park -- 1,146 acres atop the ridges and valleys of the
northwest Bronx -- is New York City's third largest park. Playing fields
and playgrounds are scattered about the park's edges, surrounding a
richly forested heartland fed by Tibbets Brook. Van Cortlandt is home to
the country's first public golf course, the oldest house in the Bronx, and
the borough's largest freshwater lake."
__/ USA CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS, NEW YORK, NY, FEB.
18-19-- Among the Michigan contenders in the open division will be
Kyle Baker, Jason Hartmann, Corey Nowitzke, Josh Perrin, Nick Stanko,
Katie McGregor, Hansons-Brooks team members: Josh Eberly, Ryan
Sheeha, Chad Johnsonm, Jeff Gaudette, Josh Moen, Dot McMahan,
and Melissa White. Dathan Ritzenhein is among the favorites for the
12K race and he'll be chased by Alan Webb. Michigan athletes in the
Junior Division include David Brent, Landon Peacock, The
Championships will be on ESPN2, Monday, Feb. 20, 12:00 - 1:00 am
(not exactly prime-time). For more information see http://usatf.org
__/ PICTURED ROCKS OFFERS NEW HALF MARATHON AND 5K -
One of Michigan's classic races is in beautiful Munising, on the shores of
Lake Superior. Race Director Lynn Champerlain anounced that the
31st annual Pictured Rocks Run for Shelter on June 25 will change its
distances this year. Expect both the new half-marathon and the 5K to
take advantage of the spectacular Lake Superior as well as the
traditional Stink Hill. If you haven't tried it, make plans now to participate
in one of the Pictured Rocks Runs for Shelter.

__/ STUNNING PERFORMANCES ON THE TRACK LAST WEEK
The 2nd best time in the world, an American age-group record, a
Canadian Record, and the fastest mile ever run at New Zealand's Cooks
Garden were all set by Michigan athletes last week"

EMU Classic, Ypsilanti, Michigan, February 10-11, 2006
-- ERIC GREEN, Front Line Racing Team, mile, 4:26.95, US Indoor
Record, 35-39 age group.
Fred Vanhala reports Eric's feat:
"Eric Green sets a US record for men 35-39 in the indoor mile: It's not
like this was unexpected - but it was still pretty neat to see. Eric was a
bit disappointed that his entry time didn't make the "fast" heat at the EMU
Classic. However, I think psychologically this set things up just perfect
for a great mile.
. . . He ran a very even pace, led for the last three quarters and only ran
into a little interference as he was lapping some runners. Best of all, he
got down to a time he hasn't seen on the track in a couple years -
running a 4:26.95.
Eric has our indoor mile record with a time of 4:20.32. But that was
when he was just a wee lad of 33. When he was 34 he ran a number of
times in the 4:23's. When he was 35 he ran a number of times in the
4:26's. At 36 he ran a number of times in the 4:29's. So - you see the
pattern. I'm glad he was able to get down close to his fastest times of a
couple years ago. The USATF just posted the indoor record for this age
group recently - otherwise we would have submitted one of these other
times from years back."
__/ MRN ON THE ROAD - GRAND RAPIDS. We were in Grand Rapids
for the West Michigan Golf show, but couldn't help but think about what a
wonderful setting Grand Rapids is for a destination race. The Fifth Third
River Bank Run 25K and 5K are coming soon: Saturday, May 13. The
DeVos Place overlooking the Grand River is a beautiful venue for the
Sports and Fitness Expo. Restaurants and nightlife abound nearby
(check the streets which border the Van Andel area). I got in a 10K
crossing six bridges and on the various paved paths along both sides of
the river. For details see http://www.53riverbankrun.com.
