__/ PUTNAM TOWNSHIP BOARD APPROVES RUN THRU HELL
The Putnam Township Board has approved Harrison and Delores
Hensley's Run Thru Hell. The meeting scheduled this evening will plan
how the County Sheriff's office works with the race to control traffic and
eliminate parking on Patterson Lake Road. The Hensley's, Hell Creek
Ranch and Gault Race Management have a plan to change the start
location and improve the start line.
To all the runners who came forward with letters, emails and calls of
support: Thank-you for supporting the Run Thru Hell. Further support is
not needed nowat tonight's township meeting.
--Doug Kurtis and Running Fit's Susan Hodgson both alerted us to this
happy development.
__/ HEAT THE STREETS - NEW RACE IN DETROIT, SATURDAY, FEB.
26
The City of Detroit's Department of Human Services is launching a new
race in Detroit with the worthy cause of helping needy Detroiters to pay
their heating bills. Race Director Steven Moran explains that entry fees
go to help pay those bills; other costs are supported by sponsors. Both
the 10K run and the 5K run or walk courses will highlight Detroit
landmarks. An expo at Compuware Headquarters Atrium is Friday,
February 25, 3:00 pm to 8:00 pm and continues Saturday, 6:00 am to
11:00 am. The race starts at 8:30 am, just outside of the Hard Rock
Cafe. Oh, and bring your ice skates to try out the new outdoor ice-
skating rink at Campus Martius Park. For entry forms and more
information see http://heatthestreets.org.
__/ TIM BROE WINS 4K; RITZ WINS 12K AT USATF CROSS COUNTRY
CHAMPIONSHIPS
Tim Broe left Adam Goucher, Don Sage, Josh Macdougal, Jorge Torres,
and Alan Webb behind to win the 4K race in Vancouver, Washington
and the third in his collection of national cross country titles. Broe will not
travel to France for the World Cross Country Championships, leaving
the sixth spot open to Jonathan Riley. For more on the story and
complete results see http://www.michiganrunner.net/news/

"I'm going into the Worlds (2005 World Cross Country Championships)
thinking that I can medal," said Dathan Ritzenhein after winning the 12K
race in Vancouver, Washington Sunday. His former Colorado
teammate, Jorge Torres, was second, and Tim Broe was third in the long
race. 2003 Footlocker Champion Matt Withrow was a surprise fourth. For

__/ QUOTE OF THE WEEK
"I think he should slow down and have some respect for us youngsters."

__/ MICHIGAN RUNNING FOUNDATION SUPPORTS TRAVEL
GRANTS FOR KIDS
Chuck Block's Michigan Running Foundation is giving back to the sport
in a big way. According to the Michigan Running Foundation website,
http://runningfoundation.com, travel grants have been awarded to kids
who qualify for regional and national meets:
"The Youth Running Clubs listed below have been awarded travel
grants for 2004. Every year there are many young Athletes in Michigan
who qualify for the Regional and National Championship Meet, but can
not attend the meet due to lack of funding. These meets are great
experiences for these young people and can change their lives. So far
in 2004 we have only sponsored 1 athlete per club. As we grow we
hope to send hundreds of athletes to these meets. We hope
to say someday, that every young athlete in Michigan that qualifies for
the Regional or National track meet, will not be denied the opportunity to
go.
--Great Lakes Track and Field
--Capital City Sports Club
--Swift Track Club"

__/ MRN ON THE ROAD: RIVERVIEW
We had a terrific time at the Riverview Winterfest on Sunday. The
separate start for men and women was fun, the course was scenic and
flat and provided those of us in the back of the pack a couple of chances
to see the fast people.
The post-
race pancake breakfast included in the entry fee featured french toast,
sausage, juice and coffee in addition to the pancakes. We congratulate
Tony Mifsud, Dave Howell, Greg Everal, Lynn Ketlehut and the
Downriver Runners for a great winter run.
