__/ DON KERN ATTEMPTING GUINNESS WORLD RECORD BY RUNNING MARATHONS ON SEVEN CONTINENTS IN 35 DAYS - "Grand Rapids, Michigan. On 11 February 2007, "Marathon" Don Kern will began an attempt to break the Guinness World Record "Marathon on each continent - Shortest duration to complete (Men)" by running in organized marathons on each of the seven continents in 35 days. Scheduled conclusion is 18 March 2007.

The marathons included in the "world tour" are: Mercedes Marathon in Birmingham Alabama (North America), Egyptian International Marathon in Luxor, Egypt (Africa), Maraton Popular de Valencia in Valencia, Spain (Europe), The Antarctic Marathon on King George Island (Antarctica), Fin del Mundo Marathon in Ushuaia, Argentina (South America), Six Foot Track Marathon in Sydney (Australia), and the Donga Seoul International Marathon in Seoul, South Korea (Asia)

All of the above marathons are officially organized events, recognized by the Association of International Marathons and Road Races (AIMS) or other international running bodies.

None are contrived just for the purpose of this world record attempt.

Affiliated charities

1) Alternatives in Motion, a local Grand Rapids charity provides new made-to-order wheelchairs and other mobility devices to people who need them.

2) City to City Run to Defeat Malaria, Donating Bti (bacillus thurengiensis var israelensis) to Equator Belt Countries. This bacteria naturally kills mosquitoes without disrupting personal health or environment, as opposed to spraying DDT.

Kern is an IT Consultant, freelance writer, and the Race Director of the Metro Health Grand Rapids Marathon. He has run 133 marathon or longer races, in all fifty states, in twelve countries, and at the North Pole."

-- Don Kern press release

Don Kern finished marathon #1, the Mercedes Marathon, on Sunday, February 11, in 4:30:20.

__/ UPCOMING WINTER ADVENTURES: - Athletes in the Great Lakes region can find fun and adventure indoors and outdoors all year long. For example:

-- SNOWMONKEY SNOWSHOE RACE, SATURDAY, TRAVERSE CITY, FEBRUARY 24 - Running Fit in Traverse City offers this 8K and 4K snowshoe event at Twin Lakes Camp on Long Lake Road, 9:00 am. The Snow Monkey Website says: "What is a Snow Monkey you may ask? Well by definition it is the most northern-living primate, known to live in temperatures of 14 degrees. Individuals have brown-gray fur, a red face, hands and bottom, and a short tail. The Snow Monkey is very smart. It is the only animal other than humans and raccoons that is known to wash its food before eating it. Well, while most of us don't have red bottoms or a short tail, on Febuary 24th you and your friends can pretend for one day to be a Snow Monkey and join us of this unique event in Traverse City. We'll have great prizes, hot chili, cool tee-shirts and plenty of monkey type fun!!!"

-- USATF MICHIGAN OPEN & MASTERS INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD, YPSILANTI, SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 24 - Try your hand at indoor track. Run distances include 60 meters, 200 meters, 400 meters, 800 meters, mile, and 3000 meters. There is also a 3000 meter racewalk. Both track and field events begin at 11:00 am in Eastern Michigan's newly rennovated Bowen Field House.

For details, including USATF membership, see http://michigan.usatf.org

-- BYOB (BRING YOR OWN BIKE) COMPUTRAINER INDOOR TIME TRIAL, MARCH 3 -- Elite Endeavors offers this indoor event for beginning and experienced triathletes and duathletes in Perrysburg, Ohio near Toledo. The BYOB Time Trial is a 10K race on rolling terrain with grades to 3%. Riders race on their own bikes on eight laboratory matched CompuTrainers. The riders feel exactly the same loads they would feel on the road at the same speed, grade, and gear. This is to say that the race simulation is remarkably similar to outdoor road racing? Indoors the riders line up side by side facing a large screen showing the course profile, each rider's position on the course, and each rider's race data including distance, elapsed time, and instantaneous/average/peak speed and power. At the end of the race the riders receive printouts of the race data. After the race the results from all the heats will be merged and posted on the Elite Endeavors Website. Check out how you comparison to all the other racers. Holiday Park Fitness Club, Perrysburg, Ohio, begins at 8:00 am. Register online: http://eliteendeavorss.com

__/ KEVIN SULLIVAN SETS NEW CANADIAN WORLD RECORD -- Tyson Invitational, Fayetteville, Arkansas, Feb. 9, 2007. "Two-time Canadian Olympian Kevin Sullivan and former University of Wisconsin standout Matt Tegenkamp staged a spirited battle in the adidas men's 3,000 meters Friday night. Tegenkamp held the lead down the final stretch before Sullivan overtook him with 25 meters to go in winning the race in the new Canadian record time of 7 minutes 40.17 seconds. Tegenkamp's runner-up time of 7:40.25 is the fourth fastest ever by an American. Alistair Cragg, a 13-time All-American and seven-time NCAA champion while at the University of Arkansas, was third in 7:43.3."

-- USA TRACK & FIELD Press Release

__/ HANSON-BROOKS DISTANCE PROJECT TO RETURN TO BOSTON MARATHON - "Boston, Mass. - With the Boston Athletic Association hosting the 2007 USA Women's Marathon Championship as part of the Boston Marathon on April 16, and the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials-Women's Marathon on the day before the 112th Boston Marathon, the Hansons-Brooks Distance Project women's team is now set to make their official Boston debut. The team's five women - Desiree Davila, Yolanda Flamino, Dot McMahan, Kelly Stewart, and Melissa White - will be visiting Boston on February 15-17 to train on the traditional Boston Marathon course, and to tour the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials route, which consists of multiple loops in Boston's Back Bay and into Cambridge."

-- LONDON, ONTARIO - Forest City Road Races Sonya Slavens, RD for the London's Forest City Road Races is working hard to make sure that the 25th anniversary of the race is successful. We found ourselves in town covering the London Golf Show and had a chance to reacquaint ourselves with the city. London, a city of 200,000 people, enjoy an ambience and abundance of wonderful river-banked parks that are scattered throughout the city. Mark your calendar now for London and the Forest City Road Races on May 13.

-- SARNIA, ONTARIO - CHOK / YMCA International Bridge Race, June 24, 2007

This race started as a one time deal to get some traffic into the city of Sarnia. George Heath, an employee of CHOK radio of Sarnia, came up with the race idea and the race was born. What was to be a one time only deal turned into five. When CHOK then said that it had to pull out as it was so much work and not a lot of payback, the YMCA stepped up and agreed to be the sponsor,as long as CHOK kept its role as media sponsor. The race continued to roll on, but Heath thought that the border restrictions following 9/11 would doom the race. He found out in March of the following year that all Bluewater Bridge related events were eliminated except for the CHOK / YMCA Bridge Run.

George Heath is now retired and this year's event will most likely be his swan song as others will most likely take over. They have some great plans for the race, including bringing back Jerome Drayton, famed Canadian runner, who ran and won the first race. Running Canada TV cameras will be there to take in this great run.

http://chok.com

-- ST. CLAIR - We met with Larry McKay of the Artful Dodger Riverview 5K Run in St. Clair and they are in full planning mode for this summer's race on June 23. There is a great riverfront festival on that day and f or those that want to run an international double, you can also run the CHOK / YMCA International Bridge 10K from nearby Port Huron to Sarnia, on Sunday morning.

__/ QUOTE OF THE WEEK

"Twenty degrees below zero and snow - it's a perfect day to run"

-- Larry Steeb, quoted by Whitmore Lake eighth-grade runner Drew Ward, in Ann Arbor News, Feb. 13, 2007. http://www.mlive.com/search/ index.ssf?/base/sports-0/11713813216440.xml?aanews?SP&coll=2& thispage=3

__/ LONGTIME WHITEMORE LAKE HS COACH LARRY STEEB DIES - Laurel Park reports on Feb. 14: "Longtime Whitmore Lake HS XC/track coach Larry Steeb died yesterday morning from complications following a brain biopsy performed last week. Having graduated from South Lyon HS, I knew Larry for many years, and always considered him a class act. Even though he was retired, his death is a real loss to the Michigan HS track/XC community."

Retired Eastern Michigan coach Bob Parks was a close friend of Steeb's and had this to say about his friend: "Larry will be sorely missed, by me, my family, and everyone who ever knew him. He was a good , great coach, and a wonderful person. "

__/ JACK BERRY NAMED RECIPIENT OF PGA LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT IN JOURNALISM AWARD - "Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. - Jack Berry, of W. Bloomfield, Mich., whose five decades of reporting featured more than 70 of golf's major Championships, as well as the promotion of the PGA Professional, has been named recipient of the 2007 PGA Lifetime Achievement Award in Journalism. Berry is the 18th individual to be recognized with this Award.

Berry, 75, will be honored April 4, 2007, at the 35th Golf Writers Association of America Annual Spring Dinner and Awards Ceremony at the Savannah Rapids Pavilion in Augusta, Ga."
