__/ THE VERSATILE BOAZ CHEBOIYWO

At an Eastern Michigan basketball game Saturday night, we encountered none other NCAA Division I 10,000 meter champion, Boaz Cheboiywo. Boaz was happy to talk about his part in the incredible "Five Under 4:00 - Meyo Mile" on Feb 8 in which the five best times of the year were run in one race. "I had the lead in the middle," he said. Boaz's first mile on the track, a sub-four, 3:58:07, was good for third. (Alan Webb's 3:59.49 at the New York Road Runners Challenge Cup Mile last Saturday was also good for third.) Boaz was also eager to mention his performance earlier in the day on Saturday (Feb. 15): he ran a school record 7:52:40 for the 3000 meters at the EMU Classic, an automatic qualifying time for NCAA indoors. For more on the Meyo Mile, see http:// www.michiganrunner.net/news/meyemile0203.html.

__/ DON'T MISS RYAN SHAY AND CLINT VERRAN INTERVIEWS

Don't miss Charlie Mahler of Running USA's interview with Ryan Shay: "Student of the Sport" http://www.michiganrunner.net/features/shaystudent0203.html "He comes to the plan (to start marathoning at age 23) based on the study of some important thinkers in the world of running - Frank Shorter, Joe Vigil, even Jean-Paul Sartre - and with an innate self-confidence that he's doing the right thing," write Mahler. We are also noticing the importance of the "Joes" in Ryan Shay's life: father and high school coach, Joe Shay; Notre Dame coach, Joe Piane and pro coach, Joe Vigil.

Alison Wade of Men's Racing spoke extensively with Clint Verran in January, before the US Men's Marathon championships in which Verran placed third. Verran says"The Hansons training philosophy is that there are no shortcuts in distance running. We are approaching development with a long-term perspective. So, for example, in the 10k, our goal is for our guys to drop 15 seconds per year." For the complete interview see http://mensracing.com/athletes/interviews/clintverran.html.
