The Cleveland Clinic Sports Health River Run in September is one of Ohio's magic races. The half marathon follows the Rocky River to Lake Erie and the 5K has a beautiful course, too.

Michigan's Paul Aufdemberge and Kimberly Dezarov Peterson swept the 2003 running of northwest Ohio's oldest continuing road race. This year's 37th annual Churchill's Half Marathon again offers runners a great tune-up for spring marathons. Start is at 1:00 pm, Monclova Community Center 8115 Monclova Road, Monclova, Ohio. http://toledoroadrunners.org.

"Normally a good winter runner, I was constantly challenged by extremely frigid temperatures accompanied by snow and ice. Several of my long runs were accomplished in extreme conditions. My 18-miler (about 29 km) was done in driving snow at 24?F (-4?C) on a one-mile out and back course (I did nine laps). I was too afraid to go more than a mile from home in that storm.

My 23-miler (37 km) was the real kicker. With ultrarunners Ellen McCurtin and Hans Putt, I did three laps of Connecticut's Lake Waramaug (7.65 mi. per lap) at 0?F (-18?C). Mercifully, it wasn't that windy, and we still managed about an 8:00/mile (5:00/km) pace. I kept telling myself that part of marathon training was "toughening up," and that run really helped in that regard.

While most of the runners in Austin last Sunday thought that the weather was a bit cold (36?F/2?C) I thought it was just lovely. Running those 26.2 miles seemed quite a bit easier than that 23-mile training run."
