__/__/__/__/__/__/___/__/__/__/__/__/__/__/__/__/__/__/__/__/__/__/ __/__/__ __/ SAD NEWS: HIGH SCHOOL STAR KAYLA O'MARA DIES IN CAR ACCIDENT--Kayla O'Mara, Goodrich High School Junior, was killed in a car accident on Tuesday, January 24, 2006. O'Mara's twin sister Kaitlin and their friend Danielle Bila were critically injured. Both sisters contributed to their Goodrich team's winning the MHSAA Division III Cross Country Championship and were members of the school's volleyball and swimming teams. The Flint Journal reports that icy conditions were a factor in the accident. For more information see

- MIAMI, FLORIDA - We happened to be in Miami during the ING Miami Marathon weekend. We spoke with Flint resident Devere Bolton who had returned for the second year to run the half marathon and enjoy the Miami sunshine and the beautiful race course. Among the exhibitors were Alan Brookes of the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon, Jim Robinson of the ING Ottawa Marathon and Jay Glassman of the Toronto Marathon. Seems the natives of South Florida fear they'll encounter snow anytime they cross the border to Canada. Maybe their geography lesson should include the fact that at least one Windsor location is South of Detroit. Look for a Michigan Runner TV show later this year.

- AUBURN HILLS - THE PALACE - On hand for my first Pistons game, we saw Kevin Hanson and daughter Samantha there for the game, too. Kevin had just returned from Europe, where several members of the Hanson-Brooks team had been competing in cross country races. Kevin was excited about team member's performances during their first European trip. Look for Josh Eberly, Ryan Sheehan, Chad Johnson, Jeff Gaudette, Josh Moen, Dot McMahan, and Melissa White to take that European experience to the US Cross Country Championships in New York, February 18-19. Oh, yes, the Pistons won 90-74-- no doubt inspired by the courtside cheering of Pittsburgh Steelers Jerome Bettis, Ben Roethlisberger, Joey Porter and Coach Bill Cowher. __/ GREAT PERFORMANCES

-- Nate Brannen, Red Simmons Invite, January 21, 2006, 1st, 3000m, 7:54.78. Carter Sherline reports that Brannen's time was one of the fastest 3000m of the eyar so far.
