__/ NEW YORK ROAD RUNNERS ANNOUNCE 8K HEADLINERS TIM
BROE, DEANA KASTOR
The New York Road Runners will host the USATF 8K Road
Championship on a new course this year. Starting and finishing at the
new Icahn Track and Field Stadium on Manhattan's Randall's Island,
USATF Women's 8K Championship will be held for the first time in New
York and will precede the USATF Men's 8K Championship. Olympic
finalist and current 5K champion, Tim Broe, will be one of the leading
contenders in the Men's race. Broe said he thinks he has a shot at the
8K American record of 22:04 set by Alberto Salazar in 1981. Olympic
Bronze Medalist Deana Kastor race headlines the women's field could
add the 8K American record (Lynn Jennings, 25:02, 1991) to her current
collection of American records, 5K, 15K, 10,000 meters, and marathon.
For more about the 8K championships see http://www.nyrrc.org.
__/ DICK BEARDSLY TO TEACH ONLINE: HOW TO RUN A
MARATHON
"(Duluth, Minn., Feb. 15) -- Now you can have Dick Beardsley as your
personal trainer. The former Grandma's Marathon champion and long-
time record holder will serve as instructor for Lake Superior College's
new online course,
'Running a Marathon.'
"Lake Superior College recently announced two new online classes that
allow students to earn physical education (PE) credits by training for and
running in Grandma's Marathon, or the Garry Bjorklund Half-Marathon.
"I'm highly motivated to work online with students training for the
marathon," said Beardsley. 'This is a unique college opportunity and I
am pleased to help prepare my students to cross the finish line.
"The courses begin March 21, 2005 and end June 24, 2005. In addition
to tuition and standard fees, a special fee of $60 will be charged to
provide guaranteed entry to the June 2005 Grandma's Marathon or
Garry Bjorkland Half-Marathon in Duluth and a unique LSC running
shirt. To maintain flexibility for distant learners, students may also
complete the course requirements by training for and running a
comparable race at a different location."
For more information see http://www.lsc.mnscu.edu/online/.

__/ FRONT LINE DMR TEAM QUALIFIES FOR NATIONAL INDOORS;
THEY'RE OFF TO BOSTON
"Relay" Fred Vanhala reports that the Front Line Distance Medley Relay
team will be running at the USA Indoor Distance Medley Relay
competition in Boston on Sunday, February 27. "For most runners - this
will be the only chance in their career to compete in this event," says
Fred. "With a few exceptions, the shelf life of a middle distance indoor
track runner is very short."
The runners and the distances they will most likely will run are
-- Josh Stryker, 1200. Josh won the 800 at the University of Findlay
Classic a couple weeks back over a field of over 40 entrants in a fine
time of 1:55.
He is a graduate of Northwood University and I believe he was an
All-American in the 800. PR is in the low 1:50's. Now an assistant
coach at Northwood.
-- Eric Green, 400. At the age of 36, Eric is still holding his own
against guys 1/2 his age. He was the country's top indoor middle
distance runner last year in his age group, and probably will end up on
top again this year.
He also was a Division II All-American about 12 years ago in the 800
with a PR about 1:51 or so. Former coach at Rochester College, now
coaching at Oakland Community College.
-- Mike Irwin, 800. Mike's a graduate of Saginaw Valley and is training
under Bill Stewart. In the Findlay Classic that Stryker won - Mike
finished third.
He's run a 1:58 800 this winter.
-- Rob Mitchell, 1600. Rob was an 800 / 1500 guy at Michigan Tech -
but has since moved up to the 5K and 10K where he's still improving
every year.
Twice this winter he set our team's indoor 5000 mark, though his time
of 15:18 has since been broken. We're going to rely on his college leg
speed to anchor the team."
__/ MICHIGAN HOSTS BIG TEN WOMEN'S INDOOR TRACK THIS
WEEKEND; WILL HONOR MICHIGAMMES
University of Michigan is hosting the Big Ten Women's Indoor Track and
Field Championships, February 26-27, and will host an all-class reunion
during the weekend. All "M" track alumni (women and men) - as well as
former coaches, trainers, managers, and parents - are invited to attend
and cheer on the women's team as they compete for their third indoor
Big Ten title in four years.
During the weekend, the Michigan women's indoor track team will
recognize and honor the following groups:
* "The Michigammes," the original Ann Arbor Women's Track Club,
created by Kenny "Red" Simmons" in 1961, and the first Michigan
Women's Track Team from 1978. Many of those women went on to
become members of the first women's track team at the University of
Michigan.
* The first Michigan women's track team from 1978
* The first women's indoor track championship team from 1983

__/ YOUNG LEGS CRASH BUMPER PARTY
Shelby Twp (2/9) - In a race traditionally dominated by masters runners
and experienced road warriors, youth prevailed at the 2005 edition of
the Bumper Run. In the still chill of the Stoney Creek evening,
teenagers took 2 of the top 6 spots in the men's race, while a full 8 out of
8 swept the top spots in the women's race. Appropriately named 19-
year-old Jason Young, a 2003 graduate of Utica Eisenhower, separated
himself from the field at 3 1/2 miles, pulling away from Brett Sanborn of
Rochester Hills and Rick Straughen of Sterling Heights to win by 39
seconds over the tough, rolling 10K loop.
The ladies' race turned out to be a battle between the area's top high
school women's teams, as Ortonville and Sterling Heights runners
showed impressive midwinter fitness in a climate that sends most
teenagers searching for their X-Box controllers. Kellee Lemcke was the
class of the field, winning by a minute and twenty seconds over
teammate Stephanie Huber, and finishing 9th overall, with Huber just
missing the top ten overall as she crossed the line in 11th place.
This was the 11th annual edition of the Bumper Run, which is held each
year to emphasize the message of safety for walkers and runners as
they use area roads and pathways to train. It was started when a local
runner was hit on the roads while running, and after surviving the
ordeal, hosts the event each year as a reminder of the importance of
using caution and awareness and accessories which increase visibility
for automobiles. Local sponsors continue to show their support of the
cause as Applebee's, Fuddrucker's, Memphis Pit Bar-b-Q, and Hanson's
Running Shops supply raffle goodies and gift certificates for the
participants. For results see,

__/ MRN ON THE ROAD: FLUSHING, LANSING
Sometimes the best part of a local race is seeing happy folks pick up
age-group awards. The Sweetheart Run in Flushing has a Valentine
twist: giving awards to couple teams with combined ages and times.
Though we opted for the 10K rather than the 5K team race, we enjoyed
seeing couple celebrate. We stopped for a great macaroni and cheese
lunch at Kelly's Downtown in Lansing, near the entrance to the River
Trail.
