__/ GET OUT YOUR GREEN FOR ST. PATRICK'S DAY RACES - With St. Patrick's Day actually falling on a Saturday this year, the St. Patrick's races are making a two weekend affair out of some of the year's most fun races.

-- SHILLELAGH FOUR MILE, FLUSHING, SATURDAY, MARCH 10 - John and Anne Gault celebrate St. Patrick's Day with a race in their hometown of Flushing. The Riverbend Striders host this four miler (run and walk) through scenic neighborhoods with a downhill finish. Kids have a Leprechaun Lope and race is part of Bauman's Winter Series. Events begin at Noon, Flushing Junior High. Fees differ for shirt or no shirt (but you'll want the shirt).

-- ST. PATRICK'S CORKTOWN RACES, DETROIT, SUNDAY, MARCH 11 - The United Irish Societies host this popular Detroit race which begins at Tiger Stadium, Michigan and Trumbull. Times are a little different for this 25th anniversary year: the kid's run begins at 11:30 and the 4 mile run and 1.5 mile walk events begin at Noon. Awards include costume prizes. Be sure to stay for the St. Patrick's Parade which follows the race. In between, stop in for a cold one at Nemo's.

-- ST. PATRICK'S DAY POT O' GOLD SHUFFLE, FLINT, SATURDAY, MARCH 17 -- The Pot O'Gold is celebrating it's 26th. Since the 4 mile race is on Saturday, the time is an early 9:30 am and the post-race party has a new venue at Churchill's on Saginaw Street. Among the traditions to look for: first year members of the Oakland University cross country team get to run in dresses. Events begin at Kearsley Street near the University of Michigan-Flint Pavillion. For more information call Complete Runner, 810-233-8851.

-- ST. PATRICK'S DAY RACES, BAY CITY, SATURDAY & SUNDAY, MARCH 17 & 18

- The Bay Area Runners Club and Runner's Performance and Apparel are gearing up for a big party in Bay City. On Saturday, the Second Annual BARC Fitness Expo will be at the Bay County Community Center from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. The Kid's Leprechaun Lope will also be at the Expo at 2:00 pm. The Pasta Dinner at Kingfish Restaurant in Bay City will begin at 3:00 and end at 8:00 pm. On Sunday, the 5K run and walk begin at 11:40 am, Cramer Jr. High and the 8K run follows at Noon.

-- CHURCHILL'S HALF MARATHON, MONCLOVA, OHIO, SUNDAY, MARCH 18 - There's a reason that Churchill's is celebrating it's 40th anniversary; the classic race is along scenic country roads and park pathways and draws runners from nearby Toledo, Southeast Michigan and usually includes a contingent from Rockford in West Michigan. The race begins at 1:00 pm, Monclova Community Center, 8035 Monclova Road.

__/ GEAR THAT HAS SERVED US WELL THIS WINTER - The weather this winter has kept us guessing from one day to the next, but having the right gear can make all the difference. Here a late-season report on new and old favorites that have kept us outside and moving:

-- Convertible running gloves by 180's have a windbreaker/ mitten cover that can be tucked into a little pocket when you don't want it anymore. Source: Playmakers.

-- Mizuno Breath Thermo glove actually heat up when they get wet. These are good by themselves and also work well as a liner with the gloves above on those below zero days. Source: Complete Runner.

-- Catalyst base layer from 180s. They promote the "no stink" feature, but I like the nose-wipe sleeve. Saved me the other day when my tissue stash apparently fell out of my pocket. Source: 180's.

-- Jacket/shell from New Balance includes pockets and a hood that zips into the collar. Keeps out rain, sleet, snow and wind. Part of the Detroit Free Press / Flagstar Marathon technical collection. Source: New Balance / Farmington Hills & Troy.

-- Base layer with hood and built-in mittens by Sugoi. Great for traveling because I can grab this single thing plus tights, shell, shoes and be ready for any kind of weather. Source: Tortoise and Hare.

-- Earwarming headphones with iPod connections by Lobz. We'd call these ear muffs, but that wouldn't be cool. Hats and iPod earbuds are cumbersome. The ear muffs not only take care of that hat/iPod ear bud problem, but also have great sound. 180s also makes a version of these. Source: Ski shop at Shanty Creek's Shuss Mountain.

-- Wool socks by Smart Wool. Warm and wicking. Can't imagine winter running without them. Source: Playmakers.

-- Black walking shoes by Brooks. Made on the same last as Brooks Addiction running shoes, these get us through trade shows, city meetings, teaching college classes and all kinds of events which need just a tad of formality.
