THE HEAT AND WARMTH FUND - If ever there were a timely run for a timely cause, this weekend's Heat the Streets in Detroit supports T.H.A.W., The Heat and Warmth Fund-- "when home isn't a place to escape the cold." Yesterday's Detroit News carried several stories about folks who are being helped by T.H.A.W. during the current sub-zero cold spell.

So, help out, head for the 10K run, 5K run or 5K walk in Detroit, Boll Family YMCA, 1401 Broadway, between John R and Grand River, 8:00 am.

__/ MICHIGAN RUNNER TV: EDITORS LOOK BACK AT 29 YEARS OF 5/3 RIVER BANK RUN - We thought we would begin our coverage of this year's historic 30th running of 5/3 River Bank Run, by turning to our present and past Michigan Runner editors for the story. Mike Duff was our first editor and he gave birth and then nourished the MR until it became a solid running publication. Mike was followed as editor by Dave Foley, who ran in the first Old Kent River Bank Run. Dave's father, Norm Foley, was an Old Kent V.P. and involved with the planning. Dave seemed to serve the Michigan Runner forever, until he passed the editorial baton to Jennie McCafferty. Jennie provided new energy and excitement to keep the wheels on the MR. She is also responsible for producing the magazine each issue and while doing that has added a newsletter and a television show to our media mix. Of late, our West Michigan based and very talented editor, Scott Sullivan, has skillfully handled the duties. Scott was the first editor who is an actual editor. He currently edits Saugatuck's Commercial Record. Collectively, these individuals have run the race, written about it and assigned reporters, photographers and videographers to cover it.

__/ DETROIT FREE PRESS / FLAGSTAR BANK MARATHON SET FOR SUNDAY, OCT. 21, 2007 - Race Director Patricia Ball announced last Friday that the 2007 date for the Detroit Free Press / Flagstar Bank Marathon is set for Sunday, October 21. Additionally, the race will keep the third Sunday of October as its date in the future. Register early; this year the race will cap the number of participants: 5,000 for the marathon; 6,000 for the half-marathon; 3,000 individuals for the relays; and 2,000 for the 5K run.

__/ RACE DIRECTOR TRAINING, SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 24 - The Association of Running Event Directors is holding a day long training session at the Livonia Family YMCA in Livonia. Speakers include folks from the Detroit Free Press / Flagstar Bank Marathon, Race for the Cure, and other race directors, sponsors, running organizations, and marketing professionals. Topic include planning, marketing, sponsorship, setting up a quality race course, recruiting volunteers, dealing with local government and more. __/ MARTIAN KIDS MARATHON -- Randy Step of Running fit is announcing a new event: "The Martian Kids Marathon! A full marathon for those 5 and over ... Yikes! The catch, the kids get from now until April 1st to put in the first 25 miles. Race day brings a 1.2 mile run in front of 4,000 cheering fans! Finishers get the same medal as the big guys! A fun program to get the kids fit and introduce them to a life long healthy passion. __/ USA CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS THIS WEEKEND, BOULDER, COLORADO, FEB. 10 -- Among the contenders for the USA Cross Country title this weekend are Dathan Ritzenhein (2005 12K champion), Katie McGregor, Josh Eberly, Jeff Guadette, Josh Moen, Ryan Sheehan, Travis Laird, Marty Rosendahl, and Ryan Shay. The event will serve as the trials race to select the Team USA squad that will compete at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships, to be held in Mombasa, Kenya on March 24. __/ B.A.A. SENDS TOP AMERICAN MARATHONERS TO OHME-HOCHI 30K IN JAPAN - Clint Verran, Luke Humphrey, Chad Johnson and Kyle O'Brien joined Peter Gimore at the Ohme-Hochi 30K in Japan, February 4. For 32 years, the Boston Marathon and the Ohme-Hochi 30K in Japan have enjoyed a close relationship. Each year, top Americans from Boston travel to Japan to compete while top Japanese finishers from Ohme run the Boston Marathon.

__/ FIRST GENTLEMAN DAN MULHERN TO BE HEARD ON DRIVE TIME RADIO THIS MARCH ON MICHIGAN TALK RADIO - First Gentleman and marathoner Dan Mulhern is taking his expertise on leadership to the airwaves with a new radio program that will be distributed by The Michigan Talk Network (MTN) this March. The nightly show will air live Monday-Friday from 6pm to 7pm on the flagship station WJIM-AM in Lansing. Mulhern says "I love doing live radio. The interaction and immediacy with great guests and the listeners is a thrilling experience and I'm looking forward to a daily fix."
