John and Anne Gault and the Riverbend Striders host a terrific Valentine event in Flushing called the Sweetheart Run. Couples run the 5K at the same time in the team event and times are combined to figure awards. __/ MICHIGAN WILL BE WELL REPRESENTED AT USATF XC CHAMPIONSHIPS THIS WEEKEND I'm predicting that Michigan runners will score three individual and one team title this weekend. The top six finishers in the Open and Junior races are eligible to compete at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships in Saint Galmier, France. Entered in the Men's 4K are: Tim Broe, adidas; Jorden Desilets, Reebok/Eastern Michigan; Grant Robison, Reebok/Stanford; Nick Cordes, Hansons-Brooks; Josh Eberly, Hansons/Brooks

The Men's 12K is also loaded with talent: Tim Broe, adidas; Dathan Ritzenhein, NIke/Colorado/Rockford; Grant Robison, Reebok/Stanford; Ben Rosario, Derek Tate, Nick Allen, Trent Briney, Nick Cordes, Josh Eberly, and Luke Humphrey-- all from Hansons-Brooks

__/ AUFDEMBERGE, LANDER JOIN VERRAN IN FREESCALE AUSTIN MARATHON ELITE FIELD

Following his surprise 2:20:56 for second place at the Columbus Marathon, Paul Aufdemberge will run his first marathon as a master at the Freescale Austin Marathon. Paul joins Hansons-Brooks' Clint Verran and James Lander as members of the marathon elite field in the race to be held Sunday, Feb. 13.

__/ EASTERN MICHIGAN'S BOB PARKS TRACK FEATURES NEW SCHOOL RECORD BOARD

We stopped by Eastern Michigan's Bob Parks Track earlier this week to meet with Chrystal Dooley, Lela Nelson and Bria Woods, members of Eastern Michigan's indoor track team, and coaches Bob Maybouer and Steve Lewis. We're working on a Michigan Runner TV show to air later on this spring. While we were there, we got our first look at the new school record board-- featuring a who's who of track and field: Donna Donakowski, Carrie Gould, Paul McMullen, Jamie Nieto, Boaz Cheboiywo, Jordan Desilets and more. We also had a chance to watch Desilets, Neil Naughton and Josh Perrin get in some workouts before their trip to the XC Nationals in Vancouver this weekend. Eastern women will be competing not only at the EMU Classic this weekend, but also at the Penn State Invitational.

We met Pete Edwards at Bill Rodgers' talk in Traverse City a couple of weeks ago. Pete is promoting an activity that is popular in Europe, is low impact, and has the added benefit of working arms, shoulders and abs. Geer involves modified ski poles. "A couple of weeks ago, you mentioned the winning team at XC nationals for women was See Jane Run. The fourth runner on the team at that meet was Mary Colburn, who graduated from Lakeland High School in 1996, was a junior college nationals qualifier while at Oakland Community College, and then ran for a year at Eastern Michigan. Mary never broke 21 minutes for 5K while in high school, but is now a 16:30 5K runner."
