__/ EXERCISE WAREHOUSE'S "DEFEET THE COLD" TREADMILL
CHALLENGE - Exercise Warehouse's "Defeet the Cold" Treadmill
Challenge, sponsored in part by Michigan Runner - WWJ Newsradio
950 is looking for runners/walkers to help in their annual effort to raise
money for The Heat and Warmth Fund (THAW). Those funds are
matched by the utility companies to provide energy assistance for those
who can least afford it during the winter months. This year in 2006,
WWJ's Third Annual 30-Hour Winter Survival Radiothon for THAW will
be held February 17-18th at the brand new Boll Family YMCA in
downtown Detroit.
WWJ hopes to keep four (4) treadmills at the Y going for the entire
30 hours with runners who will help raise money for every mile ran. To
sign up contact Pamela Woodley, prwoodley@cbs.com
__/ BEWARE CAR BREAK-INS AT ISLAND LAKE, KENSINGTON,
HURON MEADOWS METROPARKS-
Becka Knox and Susan Smith both contacted us about a rash of car
break-ins
at several area Metroparks: Island Lake, Kensington, Indian Springgs,
and Huron Meadows. Car windows were smashed whether or not cell
phones and purses were in view. Ron Olson, Michigan DNR Parks and
Rec Division and member of the Ann Arbor Track Club indicates that
security has been stepped up at the parks.

__/ IS TRAVERSE CITY'S TART TRAIL A SECRET? - Mike Norton of the
Traverse City Convention and Visitor's Bureau wants folks to know
about the 11 mile paved, flat trail that "crosses Traverse City from east to
west and encompasses the community's amazing variety of landscapes
-- shaded woodlands, bird-filled marshes, residential neighborhoods,
city streets and sun-drenched bayfront beaches. Since it opened in the
1990s, the trail has become a favorite way for visitors to get some
exercise, escape the traffic and enjoy a few sights that can't be seen
from the seat of a car."
We certainly take advantage of the trail and its many access points.
The TART Trail also connects to the Leelanau Trail, the Vasa Pathway,
and the brand new Boardman Lake Trail. For more on Traverse City
trails see http://www.traversetrails.org.
__/ DIANE HIMEBAUGH SAYS GOODBYE TO FRIENDS - Last week
former Michigan resident Diane Himmebaugh contacted us:
"My name is Diane Himebaugh. I have been for the most part a lifelong
Michigan resident. I have run all over most of the southern part of
Michigan. I began running in 1977.
The reason I am writing is I recently retired from the City of Ann Arbor
Police Dept. and I have moved to the greater Phoenix, AZ area. I am
and will continue to be a subscriber to Michigan Running News to keep
up on my friends back in Michigan.
I have met so many people at the races in Michigan and consider myself
part of that elite group of Michigan runners. I tried to contact as many of
my running friends as possible, but I'm sure I missed a few. I just
wondered if you would post a little note in Michigan Running News to let
some of the people I missed know I am gone and to say goodbye to
many many dear friends I have made. I will probably be back to visit
from time to time as I have family still in Michigan and will try to get to
some of the races to see some friends.
Thanks for your time
Diane Himebaugh"
Friends can contact Diane at littlerunaway55@netscape.net.
__/ MISSISSAUGA MARATHON IS GROWING FAST--Landmark Sport
Group, organizers of the Mississauga Marathon, presented by Canon,
announced that registration numbers are up over 250 percent from the
numbers at this time last year, making Mississauga the fastest growing
marathon event in Canada.
The marathon, half-marathon, 10K, 5K and 2K courses highlight
Mississauga City, University of Toronto Erindale Campus, historic Port
Credit and the scenic Waterfront Trail. For more information on the May
14 event visit http://mississaugamarathon.com

- DETROIT - Thousands of runners who gather for races -- Heat the
Streets, St. Patrick's Parade Corktown Races, Detroit Race for the Cure,
Detroit Free Press / Flagstar Bank Marathon, Fifth Third Thankstgiving
Day Turkey Trot, New Year's Eve Family Fun Run on Belle Isle, and
more -- already know how cool Detroit can be. This week we saw
hundreds of thousands of folks from all over having fun in Detroit, too.
Thanks, Detroit!
- NOVI - A snowstorm Saturday evening and Sunday morning only
added to the atmosphere of Running Fit's Super Bowl 5K in Novi. Tony
Mifsud, Art McCafferty, and Ed Kozloff were among the hardy souls who
also participated in the 1982 Super Bowl XVI run in 1982. Look for
Michigan Runner's March/April issue and an upcoming Michigan
Runner TV to feature Super Bowl's past and present. We spoke with
men's winner Ian Forsythe, 1997 Michigan Runner of the Year. A native
of London, Ontario and a University of Michigan graduate, Forsythe
spent fours away from competing, but has been coming back strong in
recent months-- winning races from 5K to 10 Mile.
