__/ AROUND THE BAY 30K ROAD ROAD RACE CELEBRATES 112TH,
MARCH 26, 2006 - Traditions abound at North America's oldest road
race in Hamilton, Ontario, but so do changes. This year the race has a
new headquarters and a new finish line-- inside Copps Coliseum. The
30K makes a great long training run for a spring marathon, or you can
participate in the 30K 2 or 3 person relay or the 5K if you don't want to
go the whole 18.6 mile distance. Among the traditions are generous
cash prizes which go 5 deep in the open division and 3 deep in the
master's division. The medals, too, are based on finishing times:
Men
Gold - under 2 hours
Silver - 2 hours -2 hours 15 minutes
Bronze - Over 2 hours 15 minutes
Women
Gold - under 2 hours 15 minutes
Silver - 2 hours 15 minutes to 2 hours 30 minutes
Bronze - over 2 hours 30 minutes
In fact, the "Bay Race" is so infused with tradition that the running movie,
Saint Ralph, is set at the race in Hamilton in the 1950's. Doug Kurtis
reviews the movie and talks with director Mike McGowan, winner of the
1995 Detroit Free Press Marathon, in today's Detroit Free Press: http://
freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060301/SPORTS18/
603010420/1066/SPORTS
You can see a movie trailer at http://www.apple.com/trailers/
independent/saint_ralph.html. Adam Butcher, the young actor who
plays Ralph Walker could be Tim Broe's younger brother.

__/ CAROLIN DICK WINS FRED LEBOW AWARD - The Road Runners
Clubs of America and the New York Road Runners Club named the Ann
Arbor Track Club's Carolin Dick the winner of the Fred Lebow Women's
Running Award:
"In 1972, the Women's Mini Marathon 10K was founded by Fred Lebow
with help from Nina Kuscsik and Kathrine Switzer. It was the first

women's running on a national scale or through a significant community
program."

__/ NOTES ON THE WINTER OLYMPICS - Where did so many
members of the American press get the idea that any Olympian who
wins less than a gold medal is a failure? I think the failure is the press
who fail to acknowldge the achievements of Olympic athletes and who
get consumed by the strange idea of the medal count. I think Sasha
Cohen, Evan Lysacek, Ben Agosto and Tanith Belbin, Lyndsey
Jacobellis should be honored for their achievements under stressful and
dangerous conditions.
Theordore Roosevelt got it right when he said:
"It is not the critic who counts. Not the man who points out how the
strong man stumbled or where the doer of deeds could have done
better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena. . ."

__/ DANCES WITH DIRT TEAM SIGN UP ON MARCH 4 - "High Noon,
Saturday March 4th, Hell Michigan - The teams from the last 2 years get
to sign up at noon. Also at this time, those of you with new teams to
DWD can get in the drawing for the left over spots. Can this possibly
happen? In the past, 40% of teams don't return ... perhaps still
recovering! Worst-case scenario, you get to hammer through the woods
with us at the insane 1 PM run and see the fun! Last year 80% of the
new teams who showed up got in -- so you've got a good chance of
getting in. Each new team will need to fill out a check to "Running Fit" for
the drawing! We will draw checks at 2 PM, after the run and before the
party begins at Hell's Dam Site Inn. Checks??? Yes, checks. You have
to fill out a check for $375 and hand it over for the drawing. Don't worry
all remaining checks will be returned to owner or destroyed if not picked
up. Visit www.danceswithdirt.com for more info or email
dirtdiva@runningfit.com"

__/ BEWARE NEW RACE PRIZE MONEY WEBSITE - When Let's Run
alterted us to a new Web site which tracks prize money races in the US.
Of course, we checked out Michigan races right away on the site: http://
www.performancerunner.com/. Unfortunately, we found the site to lack
many of Michigan's prize money races and we hardly recognized the
names of some races. For example, the "Ann Arbor Run" is better known
as the "Dexter Ann Arbor Run".
Among the races which are missing are
Spectrum Health Irish Jig 5K, March 18, 2006
Meteor 10K, April 1, 2006
Brian Diemer Amerikam 5K, June 10, 2006
Zanglin Downriver Run 8K, June 16, 2006
Allen Park Street Fair 8K, August 5, 2006
Run Clark Lake 12K, August 5, 2006
Milford Labor Day 30K & 10K, September 2, 2006
Motor City Shakedown 8K, September ?, 2006
Performance Runner also doesn't list nearby Canadian races such as
these:
Around the Bay 30K, March 26, 2006
Forest City Road Races, May 14, 2006
Mississauga Marathon, May 14, 2006
Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon, September 24, 2006
On way to find out is Michigan Runner's new online calendar which
does indicate which races offer prize money. http://
www.michiganrunner.net/calendar/smu.html
__/ MITCH RYDER HEADLINES CRIM'S POST-RACE PARTY - "On-line
registration is now open for the 30th running of the Crim Festival of
Races. August 26th is the date of this year's Crim, featuring the flagship
10 mile road race as well as 8K, 5K 1 mile and children's races.
This year's race day will cap a week of special 30th anniversary events
to welcome back every participant in any Crim event and honor the Flint
community. Motown legends Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels will
headline the traditional post-race flat lot party." http://crim.org

__/ RON WARHURST SELCTED FOR USA'S WORLD CUP COACHING
STAFF - "INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- USA Track and Field has announced
the selection of University of Michigan head men's track and field coach
Ron Warhurst to its men's coaching staff for the 2006 IAAF World Cup in
Athletics. Warhurst will oversee the U.S. distance efforts at the
prestigious event, scheduled for Sept. 16-17 in Athens, Greece.
Held every four years, the World Cup features a nine-team format with
competition in 20 men's events and 20 women's events to determine a
team champion. This year's invited Continental and national teams
include Africa, Americas, Asia, Europe, Oceania, USA plus the first two
teams in the 2006 Spar European Cup Super League Final -- to be held
June 28-29 in Malaga, Spain -- and a host Greek team. The competition
slate will include four distance events: the 1,500-, 3,000- and 5,000-
meter runs as well as the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
This year's event will be held at the Olympic Stadium, which also hosted
the 1997 IAAF World Championships in Athletics and the 2004 Olympic
Games. In Warhurst's last appearance in Athens, he oversaw the
performances of three Olympians with Michigan ties: former Wolverines
Kevin Sullivan and Nick Willis and current U-M volunteer coach Tim
Broe."

SHARON DICKIE THOMPSON IS FROM GRAND BLANC - Sharon
Dickie Thompson, who will represent the US on the women's 8K team at
the IAAF World Cross Country Championships, is from Grand Blanc (not
Grand Ledge). She also finished 6th to earn her spot on the team (not
7th).
DENNIS LEWIS JUMPED 6-8 1/4 - Last week we should have credited
Dennis Lewis with the world record height of 6-8 1/4 at the Eastern
Michigan Classic.
