__/ QUOTE OF THE WEEK -

"The crowd atmosphere was amazing. Arkansas really needed the points, and half of the crowd was all rooting for Alistair (Cragg), the home crowd, and then I think pretty much every other team was cheering for me. When he threw in that burst early in the race, he really came on strong. I knew he was going to do it, it was just a matter of whether I had the nerve to follow through. I knew I wouldn't be able to be proud of myself if I didn't just give it all and go with it. It was all or nothing, and at that point it was game on. The crowd was going nuts the whole way. It hurt, but that was a big moment in my career. The hardest thing about the race was controlling my nerves after watching Nate win the 800. It was really emotional watching him, and I think he felt the same way about my race. It was great that we were able to do it together and help the team get fifth place in the nation."

--Nick Willis on his 2nd place, 3000 meter race at NCAA DI Indoor Championships, as reported by University of Michigan's Athletics Website: http://mgoblue.com/document_display.cfm?document_id=1 4271

__/ NCAA DIVISION I INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS -

The big story is Michigan Men's Distance Medley Relay world best and collegiate record: 9:27.77. Nate Brannen (Canada), Darnell Talburt, Jr., (U.S.), Andrew Ellerton (Canada) and Nick Willis (New Zealand) broke Stanford's 9:28.83 record set in 2000. The record is considered a "world best" rather than a "world record" because the competitors represent different countries.

Compare Stanford's 2000 splits with Michigan's 2004:

1200 - Gabe Jennings - 2:52 / Nate Brannen - 2:54.4

400 - Evan Kelty - 48:04 / Darnell Talburt - 47.4

800 - Michael Stember - 1:48:03 / Andrew Ellerton - 1:48.4

1600 - Jonathan Riley - 4:00.02 / Nick Willis - 3:57.3

With Nate Brannen's successful defense of his 800 meter title (1:47.61) and Nick Willis' second (7:56.44) to Alastair Cragg's 3000 meter win (7:55.29), the Michigan men scored 28 points for 5th place. We must also note Kim Smith's collegiate record double; the Providence runner from New Zealand, set collegiate records in both the 3000 meter run (8:49.18) and 5000 meter run (15:14.8). Individuals and teams with Michigan ties who scored are

1) Michigan Men, Distance Medley Relay, 9:27.77, World Best, Collegiate-Record, All American

1) Nate Brannen, Michigan, 800 meter run, 1:47.61, All-American

8) Ashley Patten, Missouri, 800 meter run, 2:15:15, All-American

2) Becky Breisch, Nebraska, shot put, 56-10.25, All-American

4) Dathan Ritzenhein, Colorado, 5000 meter run, 13:42.09, All-American (Alastair Cragg, Arkansas, 1st-13:39.63

6) Steve Sherer, Michigan State, 1 mile run, 4:02.42, All-American

7) Jordan Desilets, Eastern Michigan, 1 mile run, 4:04.56, All-American

__/ RILEY MCLINCHA WILL BE "DRUBBLING" BOSTON MARATHON -

If you've run the Crim 10 Mile, the Detroit Free Press/Flagstar Bank Marthon or the Mackinaw Island 8 Mile Run, you've undoubtedly admired Riley McLincha's ability to run while "drubbling" three red, white and blue basketballs. This year, Riley, also known as the "Wizard of Clio," will be drubbling the Boston Marathon to raise money for the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, one of the Boston Marathon's official charities. Riley is taking on this challenge in memory of his friend Corky, who died of cancer in 1997. You can find out how to support Riley's effort on his website: http://www.RileyMcLincha.com.

__/ PAUL TEREK WINS USA INDOOR HEPTATHLON -

Paul Terek (World's Greatest Athlete Decathlon Club/Michigan State/Livonia) is the USA Indoor Heptathlon Champion for 2004. Terek scored 6040 points, ahead of second place Stephen Harris's 5989. __/ ANN ARBOR NEWS CAN'T GET NICK WILLIS' NAME STRAIGHT

If we weren't so mad, we'd be embarrassed. The Ann Arbor News did give Nate Brannen the headline: "U-M's Brannen repeats in 800", but the Sunday story attributed to "Local Reports" obviously didn't have someone who knew the sport compiling the article with the sentence, "Teammate Nick Smith was second in the 3,000 behind 7:56.44 as Arkansas' Alastair Cragg won in 7:55.29."
