__/ COACH ROY BENSON SPEAKING IN KALAMAZOO, GRAND RAPIDS, UTICA

Roy Benson has been coaching successful high school, college, military and club runners for 40 years. Nike is sponsoring Coach Benson's speaking tour in Michigan this week. A prolific author, too, coach Benson can answer all your questions about heart rate monitors. You can see him at the following running stores:

Tonight, Wednesday, March 19, 6:30 pm, Gazelle Sports, Kalamazoo

Thursday, March 20, 6:30 pm, Gazelle Sports, Grand Rapids Friday, March 21, 6:30 pm, Hansons Running Shop, Utica

__/ CANDICE DAVIS WINS NATIONAL INDOOR TITLE IN 60 M HURDLES

Ann Arbor Track Club's Candice Davis captured the 60 meter hurdles national title at the Nike Indoor Championships last weekend. The Pioneer High School Senior ran 8.46 at the Prince George's Sportsplex in Landover, Maryland. Maximum Output's Morgan Trent was a surprise third in the 200 meter dash with a 21.90 after failing to qualify in the 60 meter dash.

Niki Bohnsack anchored two winning relay teams for the North Kent Running Club at the Nike meet. Rachel Wittum, Kristi Powers, and Lisa Krueger ran the earlier legs on both the 4 x 800 and the distance medley relays. The distance medley relay is the fourth straight title for the Rockford club. Bohnsack also anchored the 4 x 1 mile relay team (with Linsey Stebbins, Amy Markham and Rachel Wittum) which came in half a second behind the Saratoga Springs team anchored by the Footlocker New England Regional champion Nicole Blood. Dustin Voss of Spirit of Pre/Saline (with Neil Atzinger, Tim Russel) anchored a second place effort in the boys distance medley relay. Vanessa Maher's 5-07 high jump was good for third, well short of the 5-10.5 she jumped at the MITS meet last week.

__/ MICHIGAN NO. 1 IN RAILS-TO-TRAILS

With over 700 miles of trails, Michigan boasts more Rails-to-Trails than any other state. Rails-to-Trails is a nationwide initiative aimed at putting unused rail lines back into productive use as hiking trails. http:// www.railtrails.org/

__/ BRANNEN WINS NCAA INDOOR 800

The University of Michigan sophomore Nate Brannen won the 800 meter title at the Division I NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships in 1:47:79 last weekend. Brannen also anchored Michigan's third place in the distance medley relay. Eastern Michigan's Boaz Cheboiywo earned double All-American honors with a second in the 5000 meter run (13:29:26), just a split second behind Alistair Cragg's 13:28:93. Boaz also took fifth in the 3000 meter run. Freshman Ken Ferguson, Detroit Mumford grad, running for South Carolina, was 8th in the 60 meter hurdles and anchored South Carolina's third place 4 x 400 relay team. Ann Somerville, Michigan State, was 14th in the 5000 with 9:43:72 and the University of Michigan Women's distance medley relay team was 10th.

In team standings, University of Michigan men were 16th and Eastern Michigan men placed 17th.

__/ CALVIN CROSS COUNTRY TEAMS HONORED FOR ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE

GRAND RAPIDS - The College Cross Country Coaches Association has released its NCAA Division III all-academic teams and for the ninth consecutive year, the Calvin men's and women's cross country teams have both received team all-academic honors.
