__/ QUOTE OF THE WEEK "This is the stuff MOVIES are made of."

-- Marybeth Dillon Butler, about Coach Kenneth "Red" Simmons and the Michigammes.

__/ MICHIGAMMES GATHER TO HONOR KENNETH "RED" SIMMONS

Running coach Ann Forshee-Crane, Ironwoman Karen McKeachie, Olympian Francie Kraker Goodridge, Carol Frederick Poenish and other Michigammes from Connecticut, California, Texas and elsewhere gathered last weekend to honor their coach, Kenneth "Red" Simmons. Simmons is 95 years old now, but he continues to work out every day and doesn't look a day over 70. Simmons had an extraordinary impact on the lives of these pioneers of women's running. Michigan Runner TV will show our movie: Marybeth Dillon Butler's interview with Red Simmons and some of the Michigammes later on this month.

__/ MICHIGAN RUNNER RACE SERIES 2005

It's time to plan your racing season; the first race in the 2005 Michigan Race Series is Sunday, March 20.

--St. Patrick's Day 8K, Bay City - March 20

--Tax Trot 15K,, Flushing - April 16

--Fifth Third River Bank Run 25K,, Grand Rapids - May 14

--Ludington Lake Stride Half Marathon,, Ludington - June 18

--Fifth Third Bank Solstice Run 5K,, Northville - June 25

--Volkslaufe 20K,, Frankenmuth - July 4

--The Legend 10 Mile, Trail Run, Laingsburg - August 6

--The Crim Festival of Races 10 Mile,, Flint - August 27

--Cadillac Festival of Races 10K,, Cadillac - September 5

--Lake Superior Shore Run Race Against Tobacco Wild Card / Half Marathon, Marquette - Sept. 19

--Detroit Free Press / Flagstar Bank Marathon, Detroit - October 23

About the series: The Michigan Runner magazine began naming the Michigan Runner of the Year in 1979. In the early years, readers voted for the honor. Later on, editor Dave Foley established a point system based on about ten prize money races. In 2002 we tweaked Dave's system at bit by setting up the Michigan Runner Race Series, The idea would be that runners would know ahead of time which races counted. The criteria for the races are whether or not they are competitive (prize money is still a good indicator), geographic balance, a variety of distances, and balance with the calendar. The top ten finishes for each individual runner count.

Points are awarded as follows:

Open 1st=30, 2nd=20, 3rd=10

Master 1st=15, 2nd=10, 3rd=5

Senior 1st=3, 2nd=2, 3rd=1

Three races get double points: Fifth Third River Bank Run 25K, Crim Festival of Races 10 Mile, Detroit Free Press/ Flagstar Bank Marathon. Master runners who win open division points get to count those as well as masters division points.

__/ USATF MASTERS OUTDOOR TRACK & FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS, HONOLULU, AUG. 4-7

USATF is suggesting that masters athletes (30+) make plans early for the USA Masters Outdoor T & F Championships in Honolulu, August 4-7. Info about entry forms, hotels, dorm room accommodations, excursions and more is available at http://hawaiichamps.com/ __/ INAUGURAL NCACXC CHAMPIONSHIPS SET FOR SUNDAY

The ever vigilant Scott Hubbard alerted us to the team roster for this new event, three of whom are Michigan residents: Josh Eberly (senior men), Stephan Shay (junior men), and Sabrina Monro (senior women). USATF explains: "The first North America, Central America and Caribbean Athletic Association (NACAC) Cross Country Championships will make its debut onto the international calendar this Sunday at the US National Training Center in Clermont, FL.

After years of informal discussions, the concept of a NACAC Cross Country Championships to complement its track and field and race walking championships came into fruition within the last few months. With the IAAF World Cross Country Championships coming up in two weeks in Saint Galmier, France, the NACAC Championships will give teams and individuals who plan to compete in the World Championships an opportunity to see how their training is progressing on the road to France." For more information see http://www.usatf.org/news/view.aspx?DUid= USATF_2005_03_02_10_34_40

__/ GRAND RAPIDS MARATHON - GOOD BOSTON QUALIFIER

The Grand Rapids Marathon Website makes an interesting point: "Last year 96 runners qualified for Boston at GR. That's 96/485 = 19.8%. I'd call it a 20% qualifying rate - pretty darn good! The men between 50 & 54 kicked butt with 21 qualifiers! This is good info to emphasize the speed of the course.

By contrast the qualifying rate at Chicago is between 10 to 14%, and for New York it is even less. -- Rick Ganzi, the pace team guy" http://grandrapidsmarathon.com

__/ GREAT OPPORTUNITY: BECOME MICHIGAN'S RRCA STATE REP

Robin Sarris-Hallop, former RRCA Michigan State Rep is looking for a successor:

"I stepped down officially from this role over a year ago but we have not yet been able to find someone to take on this important responsibility for the state of Michigan. I am trying to provide some leads for Beth Onines who is the new Central Region Director for the RRCA.

The RRCA has done a great deal of reorganization and revamping over the past year. They are now in a much improved financial position and have reinstituted many of their communications and programs. They have completed the process of remerging with the AARC. It is a great time to be joining their organization and getting in on the exciting directions they are moving in.

The state rep is the conduit for information between the national RRCA and the state clubs in Michigan as well as a catalyst for communication between the state clubs. The rep communicates with the clubs through email (including preparing a regular e-news communication to the clubs), attending club meetings on request, holding a state rep meeting once a year and possibly attending the national RRCA convention.

If any of you are interested or know someone who might be I hope you will pass those names on to Beth Onines (onines1@aol.com). If you have questions about this role, please feel free to contact me." (rsarris@umich.edu) For more about RRCA see http://rrca.org/.

__/ GREAT PERFORMANCES

--Front Line Racing Team (Josh Stryker, Eric Green, Mike Irwin, Rob Mitchell), 10:18.75, 3rd place, USATF Indoor Championships, February 27, 2005

--Central Michigan's men won their first MAC Indoor Track & Field title, Mount Pleasant at home, February 26, 2005. Eastern Michigan men hold all nine previous titles.

__/ SULLIVAN HEADLINES CANADIAN XC TEAM

Kevin Sullivan, Brantford, Ontario/Michigan/Reebok will lead Canada's team at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships, St. Galmier, France, March 19- 20. Sullivan will run the senior men's 4K race.

__/ MRN ON THE ROAD - DETROIT

We congratulation Stephen Moran and the City of Detroit Department of Human Services for a very successful first "Heat the Streets" race in Detroit on Saturday. More than 700 10K and 5K runners and 5K walkers participated. The Compuware Headquarters was a super spot for the pre-race sign-ups and expo, and was well-suited for the post-race party.
