__/ MARTIAN INVASION OF RACES, APRIL 1, 2007 - Whether you are an earthling, an alien, a marathoner or a runner who prefers shorter distances, the Martian Invasion of Races has something for you. The Martian Marathon, Half Marathon, and Meteor 10K, all take place at the University of Michigan Dearborn, Dearborn Heights. If your training is geared toward a later marathon, take advantage of the 20 mile training run on the marathon course. All courses are USATF certified, out and back, chip timed. The half-marathon is walker friendly. $3,200 in prize money will bring out Michigan's best runners:

__/ A DIFFERENT COURSE FOR DOUG KURTIS - March has been a life-altering month for Doug Kurtis, 55, world record holder of sub-2:20 marathons. He has retired as a systems administrator for Ford Motor Co. and resigned as course operations director for the Detroit Free Press/ Flagstar Marathon. He will continue to handle other races and write a weekly column for the Free Press. Kurtis won Detroit's marathon six straight years starting in 1987, became its race director for 1999 and 2000 and handled course operations thereafter. He was instrumental in adding the Ambassador Bridge and Tiger Stadium to the course as race director. He also created the Greenies Division and redesigned the course to add the half marathon.

__/ MRN ON THE ROAD:

MOUNT PLEASANT - On our way to Bay City for the St. Patrick's Day races, we stopped by Runners-- one of two stores founded by Bill and Jennifer Thompson. In Mt. Pleasant, we talked with the very knowledgeable Joel Fredrickson. Among other things, Joel clued us in about the Witchy Wolf series, fall and winter runs and a kayak/bike/run triathlon. Each event is run in the dark-- thus the homage to the "witchy wolf". Both the Mt. Pleasant and Bay City Runners stores have floor space dedicated to a track, so runners can try out shoes before they buy. On the walls are framed photos of famous runners-- some autographed. Bill Thompson wants high school and college runners to learn the history of our sport. My favorite photo is of Tommy Smith, the 200 meter Olympic champion in 1968. Smith is known for raising his fist with bronze medal winner John Carlos during the medal ceremony in Mexico City.

BAY CITY - Bay City knows how to party and St. Patrick's Day marks the beginning of Bay City's outdoor season with a variety of festivals. We enjoyed dinner at Kingfish, host for the St. Patrick's Day races Saturday night dinner. We look forward to a return during the summer to Kingfish's extensive outdoor deck on the Saginaw River. Every restaurant and bar in town was decorated in green and shamrocks-- ready for the party which followed Sunday's St. Patrick's Day parade. __/ MRN'S UPCOMING SCHEDULE
