years old this year, is the second-oldest race in Ohio. It's also older than
any Michigan race that we know of. Lew Kidder, race director of the

__/ MIDWEST MEET OF CHAMPIONS COMES TO MICHIGAN - We are
very excited by this news from Kevin S. Behmer, Michigan
Interscholastic Coaches Association:
"For the first time in history, the Midwest Track and Field Meet of
Champions will be held in the state of Michigan! The meet, first held in
1974 in Fort Wayne, Indiana, has been hosted by Ohio at Ohio
Wesleyan University in Delaware for the past 10 years. This meet
features the finest senior boys and girls athletes from Michigan, Indiana
and Ohio and pits them against each other on a team basis in a
memorable and exciting track meet to determine a mid-west team
champion. This year's meet will be held at Jackson High School on
Saturday, June 10, 2006 with the following three years on comparable
dates also at JHS.
For much more information on this outstanding meet, including history,
records, top performances, etc go to http://www.midwestmeet-
teammichigan.com."

__/ MRN ON THE ROAD
-- FLINT - We stopped by the Crim office on St. Patrick's Day and spoke
with Race Director, Deb Kiertzner, Youth Development Coordinator,
Marti Austin, and Program Coordinator, Dorie Barkey. As usual, the
office was bustling; plans are well underway for celebrating the Crim's
30th anniversary this August.
-- SARNIA - After following a protest convoy of trucks, tractors, and other
farm equipment on the Ontario side of the Blue Water Bridge, we made
our first visit to the Running Room / Walking Room store in the Lambton
Mall. We missed meeting manager Stephanie Barron, but Dick Felton
had a few minutes to talk with us in between helping Noon-time
customers. Dick is working with George Heath on one of our favorite
bridge races: the CHOK YMCA International Bridge Race, June 25.
We're always impressed by the range of apparel and gear in Running
Room stores and we picked up John Stanton's new book "Running
Room's Book on Running" which includes detailed training schedules
for 5K's, 10K's, half-marathons and full marathons.
-- WINDSOR - New Balance Windsor is another new store with very
friendly and informative staff. All were gearing up for the first big race of
the season, the Spring Thaw, Sunday, March 19. This is the first event in
the Running Factory race series of seven events which features age-
group drawings for runners who complete 5 of the 7 races.
-- CHURCHILL'S HALF MARATHON - MONCLOVA, OHIO - We enjoyed
meeting race directors Tony Bayford and Walt Churchill during
Northeast, Ohio's longest runnning road race. Race headquarters is in
a charming, historic building-- the Monclova Community Center. The
course is flat and scenic; on a sunny, crisp day Ryan Desgrange and
Andy Hass finished first and second; Deb Wagner led the women. Look
for a future Michigan Runner TV show on Churchill's.
__/ ADULT RUNNING CAMPS - Last week we asked about adult
running camps. Bonnie Sexton and Ray Antel replied with great news
about current and future camps.
From Bonnie:
"Borgess Run Camp registration usually runs from early Dec - mid Jan
and you can find out more about the program at http://
www.borgessrun.com and we also have ongoing (quite humorous)
blog....http://www.runcamp.blogspot.com. Run camp is currently more
than half way through...it ends April 22 for the half program and May 20
for the full.
The Gazelles Sports/Kalamazoo Area Runners Safari Marathon and
Half Marathon Program will start June 3 and targets the Chicago Half
September 24 and the Chicago Marathon October 22. Registration
hasn't started yet, but the registration form will be out at http://
www.gazellesports.com (they were also looking into online entry) The
cost for the 20 week marathon program is $100 for KAR members and
$110 for nonmembers and the 16 week half is $80 for members, $90.00
for nonmembers."
More details are available at http://www.kalamazooarearunners.com
From Ray:
"Ray Antel here...former Kelloggsville Coach and current East Kentwood
Coach...Founder of Wayland Road Runners...Founder of 44th Parallel
Cross Country Camps...etc.
I vaguely mentioned at our Wayland Road Runners end-of-the-year
awards banquet that I was forming an "Adult Cross Camp" this coming
summer...it is the next phase of my High School Cross Country Camp.
The plan:
3-5 day camp nestled in the heart of Sleeping Bear Dunes...with
afternoon excursions to all of the local wineries for tasting!"
Information will be available later at http:/www.waylandroadrunners.com
and http://www.44thParallel.com
__/ BEST OF TIMES: THE RISKS OF PRINT PUBLISHING
One of the advantages of Web publishing is that we can correct errors
and mistakes. We have no such luxury, of course, with our print
publications. Despite careful checking and proofreading, stuff happens.
One recent example is the February issue of Track and Field News. Our
issue arrived with a cover featuring sprinters Justin Gatlin and Asafa
Powell-- except that Powell was identified as "Donovan Powell". You
can imaging the letters to the editor that slip garnered.
Michigan Runner magazine also makes mistakes in our annual Best of
Times feature. For example, Doug Goodhue had the fastest 5K time in
the US in 2005: 17:51, 60-64 age group, Red October Run. Best of
Times, however, made absolutely no sense when I reported Doug as
second in his age group. The actual time of the first-listed runner was
25:21.
As a result of this mistake and of others called to our attention, we will
begin running an online version of the 2006 Best of Times. This will
give runners a chance to report times from out-of-state events that we
don't check, and, give us a chance to correct mistakes before they are
published in print. Stay tuned; we'll announce the online address when
we have the first draft ready. I'd also like to thank Gerard Malaczynski
and Jeff Gaft for their helpful comments.
