__/ MITS CHAMPIONSHIPS, SATURDAY, MARCH 8, ANN ARBOR

- The Michigan Indoor Track Series concludes with its championships at the University of Michigan Indoor track in Ann Arbor this Saturday afternoon. Field events begin at 12:15 pm; running events get underway at 1:00. One of the cool things about this meet is the opportunity to see the best high school athletes from all four divisions compete against one another representing their clubs. For example, Rebekah Smeltzer (Lake Erie) could take on Nikki Bohnsack(North Kent), Kelly Sampsonn(Cheetah) and Rqachel Wittum (North Kent) in the girls 3200. Stephan Shay (NMTC) has the top time in the boys 3200 and other top times are by Don Letts (Mad Dog), Josh Perrin (Polar Bears) and Nick Katsefaras (Jackalopes.) For more information see http://michtrack.org.

__/ PLANNING AHEAD: SHILLELAGH RUN AND WALK, FLUSHING, SATURDAY, MARCH 20

- Anne and John Gault score races all over the country, but still have time to put on this four-mile favorite in their hometown. Look for a downhill finish, St. Patrick's Day merriment, distinct t-shirts and a festive post-race party in downtown Flushing at this 15th annual classic.

__/ GARY MORGAN FINISHES IN TOP TEN, U.S. OLYMPIC TEAM TRIALS, 50K RACEWALK

- Olympian Gary Morgan was among the crowd at the Big Ten Indoor Championships on Saturday. Gary recently placed ninth (4:45:26) at the the U.S. Olympic Team Trials, 50K Racewalk, held February 15 in Chula Vista, California. Gary said he had hoped to place higher, but this winter's weather affected his ability to train in the icy conditions. The top-five finishers in the trials race are eligible to represent Team USA in the 50 km competition at the 2004 IAAF World Race Walking Cup,May 1-2 in Naumburg, Germany. Should several of the top finishers choose to focus on the Olympic 20K racewalk, Gary could be a member of that team.

__/ RICHIE BRINKER JOINS US 12K TEAM AT WORLD XC CHAMPIONSHIPS IN BRUSSELS -

Richie Brinker (Central Michigan/Sandusky), a member of the Hansons-Brooks Distance Project since 2000, was selected to the six-man U.S. 12k team that will compete in Brussels, Belgium on March 23. Brinker finished 10th at the U.S. Championships in February, but joined the team after four of the athletes ahead of him declined their invitation. The selection is a milestone for Brinker who narrowly missed making the world cross country team two years ago when he finished 9th. Other members of the 12K team are Bob Kennedy, Nolan Swanson, Abdi Abdiraham, Dave Davis and Joshua Eberly.

__/ COLLEGE CONFERENCE INDOOR TRACK CHAMPIONSHIPS DOUBLE: BIG 10 & THE MAC --

YPSILANTI & ANN ARBOR (2/28/04) --How about this for a Saturday afternoon: MAC Indoor Championships in time to watch Jordan Desiletes (EMU/Lake Orion) edge teammate Gavin Thompson (EMU/Kent, England) in the mile, watch Western Michigan's Jacob Friess hit tremendous heights in the heptathlon pole vault, then watch the 3 ring circus that is a track meet stop to see sprinter Johnny Drake (CMU/Detroit Cass Tech) cruise to victory in a fast 60 meters. Drake has the fastest times in the country this year. Eastern Michigan men won their ninth straight indoor title; CMU was second; CMU won the women's title; EMU women were second. Toledo's Brianna Shook set a meet record in the 5000 meter event on Friday. One couldn't help but be sad that the Western Michigan and Ball State men were competing in their last meet; Marshall' and Toledo's men's teams ended last year.

Off to the U of M Indoor Track to catch Nate Brannen win his 800 meter heat, marvel at the speed and lean of the 200 meter dash prelims, watch Nick Willis sit on Matt Tegenkamp's shoulder until the bell lap of the 3000 meters, then burst away on the back stretch to break Bob Kennedy's meet record with a 7:57.10. In the final event of the day, Michigan's hot distance medley relay team took a thriller with stunning performances by Andrew Ellerton's lead off 1200 and Nate Brannen's 1600 meter anchor. Brannen won the 800 meter race on Sunday with a 1:47.74 meet and track record; Willis also won the mile on Sunday in 4:04:47. It was fun to see these unimaginable, races, records and performances.

__/ QUOTE OF THE WEEK - "Walking has gotten me around the world." -- Olympian Gary Morgan of Clarkston, Michigan, discussing his U.S. Olympic Team Trials, 50K Racewalk.
