__/ DETROIT FREE PRESS/FLAGSTAR BANK MARATHON SETS OCT. 24 DATE

Once the Detroit Tigers (now 6-2!) and the Detroit Lions set their playing schedules, the Detroit Free Press/Flagstar Bank Marathon can nail the date for the annual fall marathon. The National Football League announced their 2004 schedule yesterday afternoon and Race Director Pat Ball confirmed the date for the marathon events: Sunday, October 24. In addition to the marathon, the 2004 events include a new half-marathon, a five person relay and the Compuware 5K. http://www.detroitfreepressmarathon.com/

__/ WEST BLOOMFIELD HOLDS 28TH HALF-MARATHON, SUNDAY, APRIL 18

West Bloomfield fields will be in bloom for this 28th annual spring favorite. A 5K starts at 10:30 am; the half-marathon at 12:45 pm. Both are on a hilly, challenging course. The kids' runs take place at 11:30 on the school track. http://www.westbloomfieldparks.org/

-- Scott Sullivan

__/ MICHIGAN RUNNER TV: GREG MEYER LAST AMERICAN MAN TO WIN BOSTON MARATHON

We caught up with Grey Meyer at last year's Free Press Marathon. In our interview, Greg talks about Boston, the men's U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials, Fifth Third River Bank Run, Michigan's strong marathon runners and his son, Dan, who runs cross country for state champion, Dexter. http://michiganrunner.tv/2004meyer/

-- Art McCafferty

__/ MARK BAUMAN HEADS TO BOSTON FOR 35TH STRAIGHT YEAR

Speaking of Boston, we salute Mark Bauman, owner of the Bauman's Running Center in Flint, who will be continuing his streak of 35 Boston Marathon's when the annual Patriot's Day event holds its own 108th running on Monday. We figure Mark must have started training for that first one when he was 5 years old.

__/ DANIEL, WHITE HELP U.S. WOMEN'S TEAM TO THIRD PLACE IN BEIJING

At the 2004 Beijing International Women's Ekiden on Sunday, April 11, the U.S. women's team finished third overall in 2:29:57 behind China (2:19:52) and Japan (2:22:31). Their team place tied the 1992 U.S. women's team for best U.S. finish at the event. The 26.2 mile road relay had six legs between 5-10 kilometers and was contested on the streets of Beijing, the Chinese capital and the 2008 Summer Games host city. The U.S. team also took home $8000.
