__/ WHAT A WEEKEND OF RACING IT WAS! Imagine being Paul Tergat, running the Flora London Marathon on Sunday in 2:05:48, and coming in second. Tergat, 5-time World Cross Country Champion, did get a Kenyan National Record. Coming in first at 2:05:38, was American Khalid Khannouchi, breaking his own world record of 2:05:42, setting a new American record in the process, and beating Tergat. Khannouchi also beat another one of his heroes, Haile Gebrselassie, who ran 2:06:35 for his first adult marathon --7th fastest of all time, an Ethiopian record, and the fastest debut ever. Reporters ran out of adjectives to describe Paula Radcliffe's performance in her debut marathon: 2:18:56--just 9 seconds off Catherine Ndereba's World Record set at LaSalle Bank's Chicago last fall. For more information on this remarkable day, check out www. khannouchi.com. On Monday the Boston Marathon had some interesting races, too. World record holder and Boston defending champion Catherine Ndereba ran the tough, hilly Boston course faster than she ever had in 2:21:12. Her countrywoman, Margaret Okayo, was even faster, 2:20:43, setting a new course record. We're excited, too, that three of the top 5 performance by American men were Michigan runners training with Hanson's team. Verran and Wehrman both have qualified for the U.S. Olympic Trials in 2004. 1 American Keith Dowling, Reston, VA 2:13:28 (15th overall) 2 American Clint Verran, Rochester, MI 2:15:19 (17th overall) 3 American Mark Coogan, Attleboro, MA 2:17:35 (19th overall) 4 American Chris Wehrman, Rochester, MI 2:19:03 (22nd overall) 5 American Carl Rundell, Birmingham, MI 2:22:38 (30th overall) Janet Becker of Grand Rapids was the first Michigan woman in 2:59:52.
