__/ DAVID KIMANI, ALL-AMERICAN X-C AND TRACK STAR DIES
SUDDENLY
We watched David Kimani, Boaz Cheboiywo, Alistar Cragg and Jorge
Torres lead the NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships last
November in Terre Haute, Indiana. Kimani, the 1999 X-C champion,
Cheboiywo, the 2001 champion, Torres, the eventual 2002 champion,
and Cragg, the 2003 indoor champion at 5000 meters and 3000 meters,
were the "dream team" of the season's collegiate runners. There will be
no repeat of that competition.
David Monti of Race Results Weekly, sent the news Wednesday
evening:
"David Kimani, died suddenly today after eating lunch. This report was
confirmed by James Templeton, an Australian athlete manager who was
working towards getting a professional contract for Kimani after his
graduation. Kimani was 25 years-old and was recently married to an
American citizen. He had already applied for U.S. citizenship.
"The story is posted at several news sites including the Miami Herald:
http://www.miami.com/mld/miamiherald/sports/5648921.htm
"On behalf of my Assistant Editor, Bob Ramsak, I extend our
condolences to David's widow, Chamis. So many more years to live
and run taken away. It's a terrible tragedy."
__/ CHRIS LEAR'S NEW BOOK: "SUB-FOUR" TO BE RELEASED JUNE
1
Chris Lear, author of "Running with the Buffaloes" alerted us earlier this
week that "Sub-Four", his new book about the University of Michigan
milers, is due to be released June 1. Chris spent several months in
Michigan during 2001 and 2002 during his work on the book and he will
return to Ann Arbor June 1 for a talk and book-signing. Michigan
Running News will announce details when they are available.
Ron Marinucci's review of "Running with the Buffaloes" appeared in the
May/June '02 Michigan Runner: http://www.michiganrunner.net/other/
Buffaloes.html. You can also see Lear's interview with Dathan
Ritzenhein in the same issue: http://www.michiganrunner.net/features/
Ritzenhein.html.

Olympic marathon will be on hand to greet participants. Her

__/ PAULA RUNS 2:15:25 IN LONDON; DEANA DROSSIN LOWERS
AMERICAN RECORD TO 2:21:16
Paula Radcliffe continues to rewrite the record books. In her third
marathon, she broke her own world record with an unimaginable
2:15:25 at the Flora London Marathon last Sunday. Imagine also, being
Deana Drossin whose 2:21:16 was good for third place behind
Catherine Ndereba's 2:19:55. Drossin broke Joan Samuelson's 18 year
old American Record of 2:21:21 at the Chicago Marathon in 1985. Both
Radcliffe and Ndereba now have three sub 2:20 marathons. The men's
race had its own drama: in a five-man sprint to the finish, 2000 Olympic
Marathon champion Gezahegne Abera of Ethiopia won his first London
marathon in 2:07:56. See video of the finish on http://letsrun.com
BBC Sports published a startling graph comparing the progression of
men's and women's marathon's records. Check it out at http://
news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/athletics/london_marathon_2003/
2945709.stm.
Only two Michigan men ran faster marathons in 2002: Kyle Baker -
2:14:13 and Ryan Shay - 2:14:30 at the LaSalle Bank Chicago
Marathon in October. Those performances and 198 others will be
published in the May/June 2003 issue of the Michigan Runner's annual
Top 100 Marathoners list.
__/ NEWS FROM RANDY STEP
Randy Step, who just returned from the London Marathon, was full of
news this week. Randy's wife Kathleen ran the Flora London Marathon.
At his Dances With Dirt registration in Hell, Michigan, 250 team leaders
showed up to make sure they had a space. Running Fit's new Traverse
City store, his second there, is doing very well. And he is getting excited
about the upcoming. April 27, Trail Marathon and Half Marathon.
Incidentally, besides televising the Brook sponsored Trail Marathon on
Michigan Runner TV, Randy also will be televising the nationally
renowned, Dances with Dirt.

__/ FOOT AND ANKLE INJURIES SURVEY; WIN FREE SHOES
The American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society is a group of
professional surgeons who foster education, research and service in the
areas of the foot and ankle. The Society has created a survey on
running shoes and the injuries to the foot and ankle associated with
running. The Society's Brooke Davis is encouraging runners to respond
to the survey. She says the first 1000 respondents to this survey will be
eligible for a drawing to receive free running shoes. The survey is for a
non-profit organization of surgeons who would like to learn more
specifically about the needs and injuries to runners' feet and ankles.
The survey takes less than 2 minutes to take.

__/ MICHIGAN USATF SPONSORING YOUTH CHAMPIONSHIPS
Jacqueline DeVose, President Michigan USATF alerted us to a venue
change for the 2003 Michigan Association Youth Championships,
Saturday June 21. The location will be at Mumford High School, 17525
Wyoming Street in Detroit. The Flint International Track Club is hosting
the track and field event which includes age divisions from Bantam
(1993) through Young Men/Women (1985-1986). All pentathlon and
decathlon athletes automatically advance to the Regionals in Dayton
Ohio. For entry forms and more information, contact Jacqueline Devose
at jdevose@aol.com.
__/ QUOTE OF THE WEEK
"When I finished the marathon, Hitler waved to me, and I thumbed my
nose at him. That's my claim to fame."
-- John Kelley, 95, competed in 61 Boston Marathons, winning in 1935
and 1945. (From "Outrunning the Aryan Myth", Time, March 31, 2003, p.
A18.)
