__/ TRACK & FIELD/RUNNING AMONG PREMIER "WOMEN's
SPORTS"
April 16, 2005 - Courtesy of USATF
BOSTON - USA Track & Field released a study revealing the status of
track &
field/running as one of the premier "women's" sports, as well as factors
that
may keep it from being recognized as such.
The study, conducted by Yi Analytics of New Haven, Conn., details the
economic, media and participatory successes that women have had in
Track &
Field/Running.
The success of track as a women's sport is clear: women first began
participating in the 19 th century, were first added to the Olympic
program in
the 1920s, and have been a key part of the World Championship,
Olympic programs,
and USATF and IAAF professional circuits. Track also has produced
iconic female
American sports figures over the years, particularly from its African-
American
participatory base. Jackie Joyner-Kersee was named by SI for Women
as the
greatest female athlete in history, while other iconic figures in women's
sport
include Babe Didriksen, Wilma Rudolph, Joan Benoit Samelson,
Florence
Griffith-Joyner, Marion Jones and Stacy Dragila.
Not only are female athletes high-profile, they are well-paid. Plainly
put,
women make more money in professional track & field and running than
almost any
other sport. Since the inception of authorized prize and appearance
money in the
sport of Track in the 1980s, women have always received equal prize
money, as
reported by the IAAF. In 2003, women earned approximately $20 million
in
reported prize money in Track.
Participation numbers also tell a powerful story. Track features the
highest
participation numbers of any sport at the junior high, high school,
college, and
adult/post-college levels. At the high school level, girl's track/cross
country
is the #1 participatory sport, with participation growing 42% over the last
15
years, compared to an increase of 25% among boys high school track/
cross country
in the same period. At the collegiate level, women's track/cross country
also
is #1. Among adults, close to 50% of America's 30 million runners are
women,
including among the 10 million Americans who run more than 100 times
per year
and the 8 million who registered and ran in road races in 2004.

__/ RITE AID CLEVELAND MARATHON IS ONE OF FASTEST IN THE
COUNTRY
"CLEVELAND, (April 15, 2005) Marathon runners participating in the
Rite
Aid Cleveland Marathon are among the fastest in the country according
to
statistical information released by a professional running organization.
RunningUSA, a non-profit professional association devoted to
improving
the status of road racing and long distance running in the United States,
has released its annual marathon report which concludes that
Cleveland's
marathon course had the fastest median times in 2004 among all larger
marathons with over 1,000 finishers. The median time recorded by
computer
chips worn by athletes for timing purposes, was 4:04. The report,
prepared
by the Road Running Information Center of RunningUSA said
Cleveland and
Philadelphia remain the fastest of the larger marathons RRIC had
complete
results for in 2004.
For additional information or to register for this years marathon on
May
22, visit www.clevelandmarathon.com. To view the complete RRIC
Annual
Marathon Report, visit www.runningusa.org."
-- Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon press release
__/ GREAT PERFORMANCES
-- Laurel Park alerted us to another great finish by three-time Michigan
Runner
of the Year, Paul Aufdemberge:
"Paul Aufdemberge placed 7th overall (1st master) at the Sallie Mae
10K in
Washington, D.C., (April 17) in an outstanding time of 30:15. The second
place master was 1:30 behind him!"
-- Maggy Zidar achieved her goal of running the Flora London
Marathon,
Sunday, April 17 (marathon #100 for Maggy) in under four hours. Her
time: 3:48:04.
-- Ryan Shay, 11th, Boston Marathon, 2:18:17, 3rd American, April 18.
-- Carly Graytock, 14th, Boston Marathon, 2:44:02, 4th American, April
18.
-- Ed Whitlock ran his third sub-3:00:00 marathon as a septuagenarian
at the
Rotterdam Marathon, Sunday, April 10. He ran 2:58:40 to beat Joop
Ruter.
__/ ED WHITLOCK EXPECTS A REMATCH WITH JOOP RUTER AT
THE SCOTIABANK TORONTO
WATERFRONT MARATHON.
Doug Smith, President of the Ontario Masters Track & Field Association
interviewed Ed Whitlock after his sub-3:00 marathon in Rotterdam:
Doug: "You've gone sub 3:00 three times now after 70. Are you going to
run a
marathon this fall, and will you try one next year when you're 75?"
Ed Whitlock: Yes I expect I will, I think Joop will come (to Toronto) for a
rematch. Next year 75, I expect so. The real challenge will be to get it
done
in less than 3 hours, that's going to be difficult."
__/ QUOTE OF THE WEEK
"It [Running Boston instead of London] was a personal decision based
on the
circumstances of coming off of Athens, having what I felt was a positive
experience there on a difficult course in difficult conditions. I felt I was
set up well for Boston. This is a championship-style race. I still have
other
goals of running quicker and running faster.
"This put Athens to shame. This was way more difficult."
-- Alan Culpepper, after finishing 4th (2:13:39) at the Boston Marathon.
