__/ BURNS PARK RUN MAY 5 HOSTS FRANK SHORTER
The Burns Park Run in Ann Arbor is a delightful
neighborhood race which always includes lots of kids from
the Burns Park Elementary School among the competitors.
This year, Olympic Marathon Champion (1972) Frank
Shorter will be on hand to greet the kids and everyone else
at the 5K and 10K runs and 5K walk. The Burns Park Run
was started 23 years ago by a group of parents who were
raising funds to send their children to camp. Now the run is
the largest fundraising event for the school's PTO. Call
734.662.3793 or email MEGarner71@aol.com.
__/ RUNNING FIT'S TRAIL MARATHON AND HALF
MARATHON, APRIL 28
By Art McCafferty. Mosquitoes, frogs, branches, roots, mud,
water, uphills, downhills, scratches, a double loop, falls,
dirty socks, caked shoes and a great time await those who
take on these legendary runs, brought to you by the crazies
at Running Fit. You can also run the Road Ends Trail Run, a
knuckle-dragging five miler, Saturday, April 27, that will let
you increase the size of your calf muscles to the size of
fungo bats. There is also a pizza-loading party the night
before. http://www.trailmarathon.com.
__/ STANDARD FEDERAL BANK DEBUTS 4 NEW 10K
RACES
Standard Federal Bank's new 10K Race Series will debut
June 29 in Lansing. Additional races will held in succeeding
months in Grand Rapids (July 20), Kalamazoo (August 17)
and Southeast Michigan (September 14). Standard Federal
Bank expects to build on the success of it's sister bank in
Chicago-- LaSalle Bank, sponsor of the hugely successful
LaSalle Bank Shamrock Shuffle and LaSalle Bank Chicago
Marathon. Race Director Shawn Platt is planning post-race
parties modeled after those of the Chicago races.
Runners will be able to sign up with retail partners, Gazelle
Sports, Playmakers and Hanson Running Shops or online
at www.standardfederalbank10k.com. Hal Hidgon is
designing a 10K virtual training program which will also be
available on the Website. The race series will also be a
fundraiser for Habitat for Humanity of Michigan.
285 CADILLAC GIRLS ON THE RUN
Cadillac's Carol Potter is excited about the Cadillac Rotary
Club Stride for Strive 5K Run/Walk and Blade event on
Memorial Day. "What makes this so exceptional this year is
that we have started a "Girls on the Run" program here in
Cadillac. The program was started by Mollie Brker, a
recovering alcoholic. She engagtes 3rd through 5th grade
girls and the goal is an 8-12 program that shows how
running builds self esteem, positive self image, etc. The
remarkable part of this is that we have 285 girls signed up...
along with coaches and helpers the number is at 350! They
will all be participating in our event. Paul and Jill McMullen
are coming... should be grand!"
See Ron Marinucci's "Girls on the Run" in the March/April
2002 Michigan Runner magazine, too.
