__/ QUOTE OF THE WEEK " I appreciate all the fall marathons and I appreciate that people only have X number of paydays in their system, but at the same time, you only have X number of times to represent your country as well."

-- Kevin Hanson, interview with Peter Gambaccini, Runner's World Online April 22, 2005

__/ CROSS COUNTRY STAR RILEY KLINGEL DIES IN CAR ACCIDENT The Michigan Running community is mourning the untimely death of a champion high school runner.

Riley Klingel of Fremont was killed in a head-on automobile accident on his way to school, Friday, April 22. The Fremont High School senior was the Division 2 cross country champion in his sophomore year, finished 5th in 2003 and was runner-up to Daniel Roberts in 2004.

Michigan Runner magazine editor Scott Sullivan said, "I'm heartsick. Riley was a warrior in a race, but otherwise as sweet and humble as any kid you will ever meet. "What a future he had. We've lost one of our best."

GREG MEYER, BOB SCHUL, DON KARDONG NAMED TO NATIONAL DISTANCE RUNNING HALL OF FAME "Schul is the 1964 Olympic Champion at 5,000 meters in Tokyo. He held five American and one world record. Schul is the only American Distance runner who has won a Gold Medal while being the favorite going into the Games. Kardong is a founding member and past president of the Association of Road Racing Athletes and past president of the Road Runner's Club of America. He is also a winner of the Peachtree Road Race, Honolulu Marathon and the LeGrizz 50 Mile Ultra Marathon; and finished fourth in the 1976 Olympic Marathon. Meyer was the best American man to win the Boston Marathon. Meyer ran 2:09.00 in the Boston Marathon in 1983." -- From National Distance Running Hall of Fame press release. __/ INFLUENTIAL COACH GARY STONER DIES AFTER RETURNING FROM A RUN

Joe Shay sent us this remembrance of Coach Stoner: "Gary Stoner, current coach of Lindsay Wilson College, former coach at Central Methodist College, and Harper Creek high school, for almost 2 decades died of a heart attack this morning after returning from a run. Coach Stoner helped produce many All-State Athletes. college All-Americans, a state champion and many National Champions. He brought in Joseph F Boit from Arkansas his first year of college, Coach Stoner was the person who inspired the Shay family of runners by discovering their daughter Jodie at a small road race over 20 years ago and influenced all the Shay's including NAIA champion Casey, marathoner Ryan and the youngest Stephan at MSU. He exemplified the title" coach".
