__/ QUOTE OF THE WEEK "No matter how long you've been a runner, it is through racing that you learn the truth about integrity."

-- John Bingham in "The Courage to Start; a Guide to Running for Your Life." John "The Penguin" Bingham will be in Michigan on Sunday to meet runners at the Burns Park Run, May 2, Ann Arbor. http://www.burnspark.org

__/ DON'T WAIT, LIMITED TO 600: MACKINAW MEMORIAL BRIDGE RACE, MAY 29 This upcoming Memorial Weekend, runners will have the opportunity to compete in the first ever Mackinaw Memorial Bridge Race on Saturday, May 29, 2004. The first 600 registered runners will have the opportunity to compete and experience a thrill and views unlike any other race in Michigan. "We are excited to kick off the official start of the summer season with a race across the Bridge. It is only fitting. We conclude the summer season with the Mackinac Bridge Walk," comments Brad Jones, Executive Director of the Mackinaw Area Visitors Bureau. The Mackinaw Memorial Bridge Race will be the official 'Kick off to an Active Summer,' a new initiative devised by the Governors Council on Physical Fitness to encourage Michiganders to get out, be active and enjoy the many wonders of Michigan this summer. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Michigan Fitness Foundation in its mission to improve the health and well-being of the people of Michigan.

The race will begin with check-in at race headquarters in Mackinaw City. Saturday morning runners will be transported to the starting line at Bridgeview Park in St. Ignace and run North to South, finishing the 10K race at the new recreation complex in Mackinaw City with an awards breakfast. Racers may register online at http://www.mackinawcity.com

__/ RUNNING NETWORK TV: RITE-AID CLEVELAND MARATHON & 10K The Rite-Aid Cleveland Marathon and 10K celebrated the 27th annual event with a new marathon loop course which showcased Cleveland neighborhoods and continued the tradition of serious competition. Running Network TV cameras and reporters bring you the action http://michiganrunner.tv/2004clevelandmarathon/ or by calling 800-750-0160.

For the complete schedule of Running Network TV and Michigan Runner TV shows, see http://www.michiganrunner.net/features/ mrtv_schedule.html

__/ THE PIGS ARE FLYING IN CINCINNATI THIS WEEKEND, MAY 2 In only six years, Cincinnati's Flying Pig Marathon has become a mainstay of the Spring Marathon season and the pig medals are worthy of the journey. The "Pig" features a 2 person relay, a 10K and a Piglet Fun Run. http://flyinpigmarathon.com.

__/ PAT BALL IS LEAVING DETROIT FOR TWIN CITIES MARATHON MINNEAPOLIS - (April 26, 2004) - The Twin Cities Marathon has announced the appointment of Patricia Ball as Executive Director. Taking the helm of day-to-day operations of The Most Beautiful Urban Marathon in America, Ball will lead the organization and focus on broadening sponsorships, advancing community partnerships and will oversee a staff of 6 and more than 5,000 race day volunteers.

"We are very excited that Patricia is joining the Twin Cities Marathon. Our vision is to take a great series of events and make them even better - ratchet everything up a couple notches," states Ron Abrahamson, President of the TCM Board of Directors. "Patricia and the rest of the staff have the talent and desire to do just that."

Patricia comes to the Twin Cities Marathon from the Detroit Free Press Marathon where, in the last four years, she has increased participation by over 50%, more than doubled profits and added a half-marathon to the Detroit weekend of events. Ball's real drive, however, isn't about building numbers; it's about doing the unthinkable. "People who train for and run marathons do just that and it changes their lives forever. We want to heighten that experience," said Ball. "With the staff, board and volunteers I've met, we'll be able to make TCM not only the most beautiful urban marathon but also the most extraordinary for our runners." -- from Twin Cities Marathon Press Release
