__/ FOREST CITY ROAD RACES, LONDON, ONTARIO, MAY 11
The whole family can visit beautiful London, Ontario and participate in
the Forest City Road Races on Sunday, May 11. London is an easy two
hour drive or less from the Ambassador Bridge or the Blue Water Bridge.
Marathon, half-marathon, 10K Run/Racewalk, 5K Run/Wheelchair/Fun
Walk and 2.5 K family walk start and end at the University of Western
Ontario's TD Waterhouse Stadium. The two longer races run largely on
paths beside the Thames River; the 10K loops London's Old North
district. All raise money for the Thames Valley Children's Center.
Michigan Runner TV will capture the action.
Visit http://www.forestcityroadraces.com.
__/ RUNNING FIT TRAIL MARATHON AND HALF NOW SHOWING ON
MICHIGAN RUNNER TV
Running Fit's Trail Marathon and Half Marathon in the Pinckney State
Recreation area is known for it's cold, damp, cloudy, muddy racing
conditions. Sunday, the 16th Annual brought crisp temperatures and
bright sunshine for the beautiful, but tough trail marathon and half
marathon. Michigan Runner TV captured the action and interviews with
participants. http://michiganrunner.tv
__/ CARROLLTON CHARITY ROAD RACES ARE SUNDAY, JULY 27
Michigan Runner magazine listed an incorrect date for the Carrollton
Charity Road Races on Sunday, July 27.
Race Director Craig Douglas wants to assure all runners, walkers,
spectators, and residents that the correct date is Sunday, July 27. The
Carrollton Charity Road Races feature a complete line-up of events
ranging from a full 26.2 mile marathon to 20K, 10K, and 5K walk/runs.
The marathon is the only one in mid_Michigan, and it is held on a
certified course that can be used to qualify for the Boston marathon.
Complete information about the event can be obtained by calling the
race location, Carrollton Public Schools (989)753-7261. Net proceeds
go to charities designated by the Carrollton Lions Club which organizes
the event.

__/ EASTERN MICHIGAN'S CHEBOIYWO, DESILETS WIN AT DRAKE
RELAYS
"Two EMU track athletes turned in outstanding performances at the
2003 Drake Relays, April 23-26, 2003 in Des Moines, Iowa. EMU senior
Boaz Cheboiywo went under four minutes in the Pat Deveny Men's
Special Mile Race when he ran a 3:59.61 clocking, just nipping Michael
Stember who ran 3:59.69 as an unattached runner, to win that race. The
other win was turned in by junior Jordan Desilets (Lake Orion, Mich.-
Lake Orion) who was clocked in 8:55.96 in the 3,000-meter
steeplechase race for University and College runners. The EMU
women's team came up with a big win when the shuttle hurdle relay
team of Shamarie Giscombe, Chrystal Dooley, Ronique Keane-Dawes,
and Lela Nelson clocked a :56.77 time to capture that relay title. The
other top effort by the Eagles was turned in by Brit Klanert who was
second in the javelin at 156-feet-11 inches."

__/ MICHIGAN SURPRISE DMR WINNER AT PENN RELAYS
Michigan's Nate Brannen outraced Arkansas's Allistar Cragg to an
upset win of the Penn Relays College Men's Distance Medley
Championship Friday. Brannen's teammate, Nick Willis, led off with the
fastest 1200 meter leg in Penn Relay's history.
In Saturday events, South Carolina hurdler Ken Ferguson (Detroit
Mumford '02) won the Penn Relays Collegiate Men's 400 meter hurdles
Championships

__/ GREAT WALL MARATHON TOUR POSTPONED UNTIL MAY, 2004.
As intended participants in the Great Wall Marathon and tour, we were
disappointed, but not surprised when Kathy Loper of Kathy Loper
Events informed us that the Great Wall Marathon and tour scheduled for
May 24, 2003 had been postponed until next year. The spread of SARS
cases in Beijing is the reason.
We are impressed, however, with Kathy's plans for disappointed
participants. She immediately made arrangements for an alternate tour
and offered participants three choices: 1. Run the Vienna City Marathon
on May 25, 2003 instead. 2. Refund the Great Wall Marathon tour
payment except a deposit to be applied toward any of Kathy Loper
Events international running tours including the Great Wall Marathon in
May 2004. 3. Refund the entire Great Wall Marathon payment.
Certainly, this is terrific customer service-distinctly different than the
service the Washington D.C. marathon organizers provided when they
cancelled the marathon and refused to refund entry fees.
__/ QUOTE OF THE WEEK
"Running is the world's greatest sport, with the best athletes. It requires
so much physical and mental energy, a real commitment. ... There's no
reason why the top runners shouldn't make every bit as much as the
best in other sports. I came up when the runner was exploited, when he
couldn't receive an honest day's pay. I think I helped change things.
Maybe I went too far in the other direction but I was one of the first in this
sport to call himself a professional runner, and I'm proud of that."-Bill
Rodgers. From The Quotable Runner, edited by Mark Will Weber.
