__/ IT'S A DATE: DETROIT FREE PRESS/ FLAGSTAR BANK
MARATHON IS OCTOBER 29 - We received word late yesterday that
the Detroit Free Press / Flagstar Bank Marathon has a date for the 2006
race. The marathon, half-marathon, 5 person relay and 5K will be
Sunday, October 29, 2006. Detroit, as with other races in National
Football League cities, must coordinate its date with the NFL schedule.
Online registration and registration forms will be available soon; we'll let
you know when they are.
The other day we were making lists of races with different features:
bridge races, international races, island races, river races, city races,
tunnel races, races with dramatic finish lines, prize-money races.
Detroit's marathon has all these features and, therefore, is in all of these
lists.

__/ MICHIGAN RUNNER TV: MARTIAN MARATHON, HALF
MARATHON & METEOR 10K-- We saw some green, blue and purple
Martians standing in line to register; more Martians served as mile
markers. Michigan Runner TV follows earthlings and martians along the
scenic, out-and-back Hines Drive course for the marathon, half-
marathon, and 10K on April 1. http://michiganrunner.tv/2006/
__/ CRIM TRAINING PROGRAM APPLICATIONS AVAILABLE - "Do you
want to get in shape and lead a healthier, active lifestyle but don't know
how to get started? Or do you want to improve your running speed?
Whatever your motivation, the Crim Training Program is just what you've
been looking for. The Crim tailors this unique program to your fitness
ability and needs.
Applications are now available for the program, set to begin May 2nd.
The program is based on the 15-week training regimen designed by Jeff
Galloway, wellness consultant, noted author, former Olympic athlete and
trainer. Galloway's low impact program combines running with walking
breaks and requires less than two additional hours of exercise beyond
the weekly training group meetings. Both running and walking programs
are available.
The cost for the Crim Training Program is $120 individually and $200
($100 each) for those who sign up with a friend. The deadline is April
19, and space is limited. Applications may requested by calling the
Crim office at 810-235-3396 or may bet be downloaded from the Crim
website at http://www.crim.org and http://www.abc12.com"

__/ GENE BLAWAJDER DIES IN DROWNING ACCIDENT - David
Mitchell sent us this sad news:
"Tragic news to share---Gene Balawajder, the Milford HS AD and a
Michigan High School Hall of Fame track and CC coach, passed away
yesterday. Here's a link to the newspaper story:
http://www.livingstondaily.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060403/
NEWS01/604030303/1002.
"Gene's strong positive influence spread far beyond Milford and
Oakland
County in the great things that his former students and athletes have
done and continue to do as coaches and in all walks of life. He will be
missed in countless ways, but without a doubt, his legacy lives on.

__/ FIFTH THIRD RIVER BANK RUN CHANGES COURSES - "GRAND
RAPIDS, MICHIGAN (April 5, 2006)-- Fifth Third River Bank Run
officials have announced that the 25K and 5K Run courses will change
from those used in 2005. The new courses will be used for the 2006
event which will take place on Saturday, May 13 and are
available by connecting to www.53riverbankrun.com.
'We just received approval from the City of Grand Rapids for our
requested changes to both the 25K and 5K Run/Walk courses," says
Kristen Aidif, Race Director, Fifth Third River Bank Run. "For the first time
since 1999, the 25K course will incorporate Lake Michigan Drive in the
last miles of the event. This will move participants off many of the narrow
roads and turns they have
experienced during the past several years after exiting John Ball Park.
In addition, the 5K Run will now merge with the 25K at the corner of
Fulton and Ottawa at the last half mile prior to the finish, avoiding much
of the congestion participants have felt in the past when the two events
came
together earlier in the race. Plus, the 5K will really showcase the City of
Grand Rapids by incorporating the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum
drive and the Sixth Street Bridge.'"

__/ MRN ON THE ROAD - DEARBORN HEIGHTS, MARTIAN
MARATHON & 10K - We'd like to congratulate Ian Forsyth on his idea for
a 10K to be run in conjunction with Running Fit's Martian Marathon,
Half-Marathon and Boston-bound training run. The first Metor 10K drew
a deep and fast field. Boaz Cheboiywo (28:55) cruised to the men's win
and Laurel Park (36:16), 43, beat several fast 20-somethings for the
women's win. The best race of the day was for second place: Steve
Crane (30:24) edged Nick Stanko (30:24) in a photo-finish that one
typically sees only in sprints.
