__/ FIFTH THIRD RIVER BANK RUN- ITS GUT CHECK TIME
Start your engines or start your excuses as it is that time of year again;
the running of 53 River Bank Run. 25 kilometers is a great test of fitness
as you gear up for your running year. I have hammered the course in
years
past and have been hammered in just as many other years. It is one of
our
nation's greatest road races and the folks in Grand Rapids always put
out t
he welcome starting mat. Good luck to all from the MR

__/ GREAT WALL MARATHON, HERE WE COME
In two day's time your editor will be on her way to Beijing, joining Kathy
Loper Events for the Great Wall Marathon on May 21. Have the
passport, the
visa, the training, including training on steps since we'll have 3600 of
those. Next week, Michigan Runner publisher, Art McCafferty, will be
sending out Michigan Running News. I expect to have a great MRN ON
THE
ROAD in two weeks.
__/ CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIPS HIGHLIGHT COLLEGE TRACK
& FIELD SEASON
-- Mid-American Conference Championships, Athens, Ohio, May 12-14
Look for Eastern Michigan's Lela Nelson to lead Eastern women to the
Mac title.
Central Michigan men could follow their indoor title with the outdoor win
despite
the loss of injured sprinter Johnie Drake.
-- Big Ten Outdoor Championships, Columbus Ohio, May 13-15
Michigan women could make it four consecutive outdoor titles with a
powerhouse
team led by Lindsey Gallo in the distance events.
The Spartan and Wolverine men have the talent to score well, but will
have a tough time
overcoming Wisconsin.
-- MIAA Championships, North Central College, Naperville, Illinois, May
12-13
Calvin's Nate Meckes could win a Division III national title in the discus
throw and
should lead his team to the Conference championship.
-- GLIAC Championships, May 5-6
Grand Valley's Lakers won their third straight conference title and the
women took
their sixth straight.
__/ MICHIGAN RUNNER TV: GARY MORGAN IN KILIMANJARO
Olympic race walker Gary Morgan talks about his latest adventure:
running the
Kilimanjaro Marathon in Tanzania, then climbing Africa's highest peak,
Mount
Kilimanjaro. The Kathy Loper Events tour also sent Morgan on his first
safari.

__/ TIFFANY OFILI OF YPSILANTI HS ON TV
David Mitchell, Pinckney High School Track Coach and announcer of
local and national
track and cross country meets, sent us this alert:
"Tiffany Ofili of Ypsilanti HS will be featured on the State Champs! High
School
Sports Show on Detroit's Channel 4 immediately following Saturday
Night Live this
week. Technically, it will come on at 1am Sunday 5-15-05. Set those
VCR's or
plan to stay up late to see the feature on one of our state's top all-around
student-athletes."
Tiffany led the Ypsilanti High School Braves to the Division II State
Championship
in 2004.
__/ MICHIGAN RUNNERS OF THE YEAR-2004
Jennie McCafferty will be participating in the 2005 Great Wall of China
Marathon
and leaves for China this Friday. Because of that, we will not be
honoring our
2005 winners at the 53 River Bank Run this year. We will, instead,
make the
presentations at the Crim Festival of Races. My apologies for not getting
this
message out sooner.
-- Art McCafferty, Publisher, Michigan Runner
__/ FIFTH THIRD BANK SOLSTICE RUN CERTIFIES COURSES
The Fifth Third Bank Solstice Run has announced several important
new changes
to the third edition of the Northville race on June 25. To ramp up the
competition
in the new 10K run, the top 300 overall finishers in 10K Run will receive
medals.
Also, both the new 10K and 5K event courses are USATF certified. The
competition in
the 5K will be serious, too as that event is part of the 2005 Michigan
Runner Race
Series. In fact, you know you'll be in for a special experience as Detroit's
own
Karen Newman will sing the National Anthem at 5K Run/Walk 9:00 am
start. To
register see http://solsticerun.org.

4th.
