__/ RON WARHURST FEATURED IN MAY/JUNE MICHIGAN
RUNNER
The University of Michigan's Ron Warhurst is coaching the
hottest runners in the country. Tom Henderson interviews
Coach Warhurst along with Tim Broe, Nate Brannen, Kevin
Sullivan and Alan Webb in the May/June Michigan Runner
magazine. The Michigan Runner is available at specialty
running stores.
__/ RECORD PARTICIPATION IN 25TH ANNUAL FIFTH
THIRD RIVER BANK RUN
The Fifth Third River Bank Run celebrated its 25th running in
style with record participation in the 25K (4,738), 5K run
(3,015), 5K walk (756) and kid's race (1,387). South African
Krige Schabort set a new 25K Wheelchair World Record
(51:30), earning a $5,000 bonus for shattering the 25K
Wheelchair WR that Ernst Van Dyle set at the River Bank
Run last year (52:02). Winner Ronald Mogaka's 1:13:56 was
one second short of a new World Record. Teresa Wanjiku
(1;26:57) of Kenya held off newcomer Jeanne Henessy
(1:27:18) of New York for the win. Henessy won the USATF
25K National Championship while David Morris won the
men's USATF 25K race.
Bill Rodgers, winner of the first River Bank Run in 1978,
returned for the 25th anniversary and ran a respectable
1:35:11 for second place in the 50-54 age group. And who
was first in that age group? None other than marathon-man
Doug Kurtis, whose 1:27:37 was also good for 3rd place
among Michigan master runners. Betsy Frens (17:04) and
Matt Kaczor (15:25) won the 5K event. Complete results are
available at http://www.classicrace.com
__/ MICHIGAN RUNNER RACE SERIES 25K
CHAMPIONSHIP
Kyle Baker (1:17:57) earned his 2nd Michigan Runner Race
Series title and was 4th in the USATF 25K National
Championship. Laura Murphy won the Michigan Runner
Race Series women's title in 1:37:46. Laurie Decker
((1:41:05) and Phil Bedford (1:20:55) won the masters titles.
__/ LASALLE BANK CHICAGO MARATHON BOOSTS
ECONOMY BY $90 MILLION
Chicago was unusually quiet the first weeks after
September 11. Hotel staff and taxi drivers told us that they
noticed a huge change the first weekend in October--the
weekend of the LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon. Now, the
Regional Economic Application Laboratory (REAL) has
released figures on the Marathon's economic impact. From
1996 to 2001, the marathon's impact has grown three-fold
from $29.6 million to $90 million. The growth in the number
of registered participants is equally impressive, increasing
from 10,925 in 1996 to 37,500 in 2001.
__/ DEXTER ANN ARBOR HALF MARATHON IS RRCA
