Colleen Dereuck pulled off a trifecta at the 28th Annual Fifth Third
River Bank Run. She won $4000 for being the first female in the race,
$4000 for first place in the 25K USA NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS and
$1,500 for being the first female masters.
The Kenyans captured the top 3 spots in the race, while Brian Sell
captured the 25K USA NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS first place race
and his own 4K. Other Michigan runners that did well in the nationals
were Clint Verran who finished 4th, Paul Aufdemberge 7th and Kyle
O'Brien, who came in 10th.
In the 25K USA NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS , Leigh Daniel of
Rocherster Hills, finished 5th.
The numbers again were up for the events as the final tally was 10,896
participants as compared with 10,127 in 2004.
__/FOR LAUREL PARK ONLY 5K
Laurel Park captured her 6th For Women Only 5K run in Ann Arbor.
She polished off a field of over 900 women in a fine, 17:58, beating
Jessica Pontius by over a minute.
__/DON HOWITT-AIN'T NO MOUNTAIN HIGH ENOUGH
East Grand Rapids native Dan Howitt, 35 years old, set astounding
official speed records on all of the major speed climbing mountains in
the US. They are Mt. Rainier, Shasta, Adams, and Hood. These are
glaciated volcanoes, and provide the most elevation gain from the base
to the summit.
Dan also set records on all 5 of the major mountains in the Columbia
Gorge Range in Oregon in 2004, running with his yellow Labrador for
most of them.
Some examples, Mt. Rainier 9 miles 9011 vertical feet in 4 hours 59
minutes 5 seconds as timed by hired professionals of Climb Max
Mountaineering.
In 1959
the first ever official record on Rainier was set by legendary Everest
climber Jim Whittaker in 5:20 minutes. Whittaker was the first U.S.
citizen to summit Mt. Everest. Whittaker also speed climbed Mt.
McKinley.
Visit the website for USA Mountain Speed Climbing,

__/ SCOTIABANK TORONTO WATERFRONT MARATHON INCREASES
PRIZE PURSE
http://www.torontowaterfrontmarathon.com/en/news/Apr_11_05.htm
Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon recently released details on
the 2005 prize purse for September 25th The total purse of almost
$70,000 is a significant increase over 2004 levels, and first place
(men and women) in the marathon goes from CDN$8,000 in 2004, to
CDN$15,000 this year.
Race Director Alan Brookes said that he and the Committee are
"delighted" with the increases, made possible by increased
sponsorship from Scotiabank and adidas, plus the growth of the event,
from 5,866 runners in 2003 to 9,007 last Fall. "Last year's prize purse got
us a 2:14 winning time," said Brookes.
"This was a significant improvement from the 2:16 in 2003. We hope
that the 2005 elite package will get us a men's winner somewhere in
the 2:10 to 2:12 range, and a women's winner in the low 2:30's.
Toronto Waterfront has received remarkable publicity over the past 2
years, and is now truly recognized on the marathon world stage.
Scotiabank and adidas International have both made strong
commitments to sustaining this momentum, and firmly establishing the
event as a top-flight international marathon. This year's prize money is
another important step!"
