__/ PATRICK GILDEA JOINS HANSONS-BROOKS DISTANC
E PROJECT
We stopped by Hansons Running Shop in Utica on Sunday
and had a chance to chat with Kevin Doyle, Brian Sell and to
meet one of the new members of
the team, Patrick Gildea. Patrick is a native of Holbrook, New
York, recently arrived from the University of Tennessee in Kn
oxville and expects to focus on
the 10K. We were a little surprised when Patrick said he mis
ses Tennessee's humidity, though. Just wait for August, Pat
rick. Brian is looking forward to the LaSalle Bank Chicago M
arathon in the Fall and Kevin mentioned that he likes Tim Br
oe's interviews on Michigan Runner TV. Next up for the
Hansons-Brooks athletes is The Great Race in Elkhart, Indi
ana on Memorial Day.
__ / BOAZ CHEBOIYWO IS CONFIDENT AS HE TRIES FOR
KENYAN OLYMPIC TEAM
You never know whom you'll see at the grocery store. Yester
day, we encountered
NCAA Cross Country and 10,000 meter champion, Boaz Ch

as a professional runner under his belt and is one of fifteen
Kenyan athletes who have met the Olympic "A" standard for t
he 10,000 meter event. He'll be competing at the Home Dep
ot Invitational, Carson, California and at the
adidas Oregon Track Classic in Portland, Oregon, June 5 b
efore heading off
to Nairobi. Boaz says his training is going very well and that
he gained a lot
of confidence competing for Kenya at the World Indoor Cha
mpionships in March.
And, yes, Boaz confirmed that he did indeed join the Ypsilant
i Girls Track and Field team on a training run last week.

LAKE & DETROIT ZOO RACES
Standard Federal Bank has signed five year agreements to
become the title sponsor of two longstanding Michigan road

6, 2004 and is the
Michigan Runner Race Series 10K. The Standard Federal B
ank Run Wild for the

that the total purse for the SFB Reeds Lake purse for the 5K

__/ MICHIGAN RUNNER RACE SERIES - STANDINGS
Last week we reported that we were playing with spreadshe
ets to see what
would happen if we changed the scoring for senior runners.
We agree with
Gary Wolfram who pointed out that we shouldn't change the
rules in the middle of
the game. The scores get interesting when seniors score p
oints in the masters
category or when masters score points in the open category
. (We're still curious, though, and will report any differences
we see at the end of the season.)
Standings after three races:
Open Women
1 Jackie Rzepecki - 50 points
2 (tie) Denisa Costescu - 30 points
2 (tie) Megan James - 30 points
Masters Women

2 Karen Benardino - 4 points
3 (tie) Maggy Zidar - 3 points

__/ QUOTE OF THE WEEK
The reason I think Dathan is the real deal is he obviously h
as physical talent, physical ability, we've seen that in his per
formances. But he has a mind of a champion. Just the few t
imes I've spoken to him and watched him race, he does not
get flustered. He doesn't have up and down performances.
He's solid all the time. He thinks for himself. He's not
led easily by any one individual or group. That is a kind of a
foundation to be a great athlete if you have the talent to back
it up."
