__/ IT'S A GREAT WEEKEND OF RACING AHEAD
The summer racing season kicks off in earnest this weekend with a
great variety of races from which to choose:
--FRUITPORT OLD RASHIONED DAYS RUN
For those in the Western Michigan area, check out the scenery of this
classic small town festival race. Fruitport celebrates it's Old Fashioned
Days on Saturday (May 28) with both 10K and 5K runs. The action starts
at 9:30 am. Call Donald Wood (231) 865-6273 for more information.
--ELKHART, INDIANA'S BANK ONE/ THE TRUTH GREAT RACE
SPORTS FESTIVAL
This Sports Festival is a dizzying collection of road races, track,
swimming, in-line skating, cycling, basketball, canoe and kayak racing,
tennis and more.
The very competitive Jim Ryun Mile is Saturday evening (May 28) at
the High School Track. A new in-line skate "criterium", cycling, canoe
and kayack are featured on Sunday (May 29). Prize money guarantees
that the road racing which takes over on Monday (May 30) will be
competitive. Choose among the half marathon, 10K, 5K, and in-line
skating. Check out Michigan Runner TV's video online: http://
michiganrunner.tv/2004greatrace/. For details see http://
www.thegreatrace.net.
--MACKINAC MEMORIAL BRIDGE RACE
You can register through Thursday, May 26 for the second annual
Mackinac Memorial Bridge Race. You'll never forget the thrill of running
over the Mighty Mac at sunrise. For details and registration see
http://www.mackinawcity.com.
--ING OTTAWA MARATHON
The long weekend is a great time to visit Ontario's capital city and
run a 10K, a half-marathon, or the full marathon. Details are at
http://www.ncm.ca/scenic/.
--GROSSE ILE MEMORIAL DAY 8K
If you like a scenic course with significant competition, the Island
Road Runners put on this 8K. The action begins at 8:30 am. See
http://www.ncm.ca/scenic/.
__/ MRN ON THE ROAD: BEIJING, XI'AN & TIANJIN, CHINA
If you are looking for a destination race, you'll have a wonderful
time visiting China and running the 10K, half marathon or marathon of
the Great Wall. The Great Wall Marathon offers spectacular scenery,
uneven steps designed to impede the progress of invading armies,
friendly villagers and an international field. I particicpated in the tour
organized by Kathy Loper and Kurt Bodmer of Kathy Loper Events.
Kathy and Kurt's attention to detail, flawless arrangements, their
personal touch and a terrific group on the "Loper 2" tour all contributed
to a wonderful trip.Tough? You bet, but the wall itself and the rest of the
course through the surrounding countryside were worth the effort.
Entries to the Great Wall Marathon can only be bought as part of a tour
package. http://kathyloperevents.com
Ann Arbor resident Gregory Feucht smashed the course record by 13
minutes to win in 3:25:13. Feucht runs for the Front Line Racing Team
and is on a temporary assignment to Shanghai.
__/ CITY OF BURTON MEMORIAL DAY 5K/10K CANCELLED
We received word that the City of Burton Memorial Day 5K and 10K has
been cancelled. The event was originally scheduled for Monday, May
30.
__/ RUN FOR YOUR HEALTH 5K ENDS AFTER 20 YEARS
Folks at Mercy General Health Partners in Muskegon have decided to
end Labor Day Run for Your Health 5K after 20 years of sponsoring the
event.
__/ RUNNING FIT VOLUNTEER PROGRAM

offering all volunteers FREE ENTRY into one of the following Running

interested or call 734.769.5675.
__/ OOPS: ATHLETICS NEW ZEALAND FORGOT NICK WILLIS
Carter Sherline alerted us to this news:
The New Zealand Herald reports that Olympic 1500m runner Nick Willis
has been added to the New Zealand world championships team after an
"embarrassing" oversight by the national track and field selectors.
Athletics New Zealand general manager Jeremy Kennerley
confirmed that United States-based Willis would be added
to the team of 10 named last week for the August
championships in Helsinki.
Kennerley said there was confusion among the selectors
over whether Willis was targeting the 1500m or 800m in
Helsinki, and whether he had run a sufficient qualifying
time.
Willis reached the 1500m semifinals at the Athens
Olympics last year, but missed the final by two placings.
Athletics NZ's recently-resigned performance manager
Tony Rogers, the athletics coach at last year's Olympics,
was staggered at Willis' omission from the initial squad.
"He's run 3min 41sec outdoors this season ... I don't think
form is an issue for Nick, I think communication has been.
"He's met all the criteria."
