__/ QUOTE OF THE WEEK

"They took away my father's career. They took away his life. Today it would be the same as some administrator telling Tiger Woods his career is over. Can you imagine how Tiger Woods would have felt, and how the rest of the world would have reacted, if he had been told at the age of 22 that he could never again participate in serious competition? Jesse Owens was touted as this legend who had beaten Hitler. Yet, back home in America, he was continually reminded that he was not so special. He was still black - just like Joe Louis."

-- Marlene Owens Rankin, 2000, from "A Special Bond Between Champions; Joe Louis and Jesse Owens Endured Hard Times," by Donald McRae. New York Times, Sunday, May 25, 2003, Sports Sunday, Section 8, p. 10.

McRae tells the astonishing story of Avery Brundage, President of the U.S. Olympic Committee, barring Jesse Owens from the track for life for leaving an Olympic barnstorming tour across Europe. Owens was traveling with no money and little food. Donald McRae is the author of "Heroes Without a Country; America's Betrayal of Joe Louis and Jesse Owens" which will be published by Ecco on June 3.

__/ MICHIGAN RUNNER TV: THE GREAT RACE, ELKHART, INDIANA

Michigan Runner TV dropped in on Elkart, Indiana on Memorial weekend to capture the excitement of The Great Race. This is a real happening as the towns of Goshen and Elkart provide 31 different events to test locals and visitors. Running, inline skating, swimming, power walking, basketball, canoeing, kayaking, and biking are but a few of the events in The Great Race. Keith and Kevin Hanson were on hand to present the awards for the Jim Ryun Mile on Saturday; Jerry Johncock was hoping to collect his second cash prize for being the oldest competitor. Jerry ran a fast half-marathon, too. For results see http:// thegreatrace.net. The show airs on http://michiganrunner.tv

__/ BRIAN DIEMER AMERIKAM 5K RACE, SATURDAY, JUNE 7

Prize money (10 deep for open, five deep for masters, including $500 for male and female winners) draws the state's elite to the home-town of three-time Olympic steeplechaser and '84 bronze medalist Brian Diemer. Stick around for the Cutlerville Days parade, awards and Junior Jog. Visit http://www.diemerrun.com or phone (616) 575-3363. -Scott Sullivan
