__/ MICHIGAN RUNNER TV: WYLD BILL 5K AND HILLSDALE "GINA"
RELAYS
The Hillsdale "Gina" Relays attracted college teams, track clubs and
world-class athletes from Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Illinois, Kentucky,
Wisconsin, New York, Colorado and Ontario. The meet also features the
WYLD Bill 5K, named in honor of meet director, Bill Lundberg. Join
Michigan Runner TV host, Tim Broe, as we begin a series on the
Hillsdale "Gina" relays. We begin this week with the WYLD Bill 5K and a
tour of Hillsdale. http://michiganrunner.tv/2006hillsdale/
__/ GOVERNOR PROMOTES NEW PROGRAM: MENTORING: A
RUNNING START
"May 2, 2006
Mentoring: A Running Start
New Program to Promote Wellness for Mentors and Mentees
LANSING - Running the Mackinaw Bridge on Labor Day just ahead of
approximately 50,000 walkers who annually make the trek is an exciting
opportunity given to 300 Michigan runners from across the state each
year. In 2006, mentor teams from across Michigan will also be invited to
join the run.
"The partnership between an adult mentor and youth mentee has
provided a positive role model in the life of thousands of Michigan
children," said First Gentleman Daniel G. Mulhern. "This program will
encourage a wellness component as part of that relationship by
providing an opportunity for 15 to 20 mentor/mentee teams to run the
bridge on Labor Day."
Mulhern serves as chair of the Michigan Community Service
Commission (MCSC) which directs Mentor Michigan and serves as the
honorary vice chair of the Governor's Council on Physical Fitness,
Health and Sports.
The program, Mentoring: A Running Start, will match an honorary coach
with each mentor team. Teams will receive training, running shoes, a
trip to Mackinac Island, including accommodations at Mission Point
Resort and a tour of the Mackinac Bridge. The honorary coaches will
provide sponsorship for their team's training and travel during the
summer training process. Sponsors include Michigan State Medical
Society, Michigan Health and Hospital Association, Michigan Education
Special Services Association, General Motors Foundation, and the
Detroit Lions. Training support is being provided by the YMCA,
Michigan's Olympic community, the Crim Festival of Races and other
running organizations.
For more information, or to apply online, go to the Governor's Council
website at www.michiganfitness.org . The deadline for applying is May
22 at 5 p.m."
-- Press Release: Office of Governor Jennifer Granholm
__/ 367 - Talk about ink: according to Kevin Hanson, 367 is the number
of newspaper and magazine articles about the Hanson-Brooks Team at
the 2006 Boston Marathon. We were wondering about Mike Morgan's
DNF at Boston. What happened? Kevin said Mike planned only to run
through about Mile 16, then jump on the "T". Mike and team mate Josh
Eberley are planning to run the Fifth Third River Bank Run 25K on May
13.
__/ JN CARATHON 2 & 5 MILE RUN AGAINST HUNGER, SUNDAY
MAY 7 - This new race is a benefit for the Gleaners Food Bank. 9:00 am
start is at the Oakland Community College Campus in Bloomfield Hills.
Strollers and walkers are welcome and there is a diaper dash for kids 2-
5. For details, see http://jncarathon.com.
__/ FLYING PIG, CINCINNATI, SUNDAY, MAY 7 - If your are up for a
weekend get-a-way, you can still register for the marathon, half-
marathon, 10K or 5K at the expo on Friday or Saturday in Cincinnati.
Everything about this race is meant to be fun for runners-- newsletter
("The Squeal") course, medals, and the second annual Flying Pig
Marathon night at the Cincinnati Reds baseball game.
http://www.flyingpigmarathon.com/
__/ MRN ON THE ROAD - HILLSDALE - We had a great time at the
Hillsdale "Gina" Relays last week. We agree with Fred Vanhala that the
4 x 800 relay is one of the most fun events to watch. Front Line Racing
"post-collegiate" team included Josh Stryker, Eric Green, Steve Walke
and Pedro Ortega, who finished in a terrific 7:51.04.
We noticed that a couple of Michigan State cross country runners have
taken up the 3000 steeplechase with terrific results. Nicole Bush won
the women's steeple in 10:21.97 while Dustin Voss took third in the
men's steeple in 9:06.72. Hillsdale's coach, "Wyld" Bill Lundberg-- the
heart and organization behind this meet-- is himself a former
steeplechaser. Lundberg sported his Kansas Jayhawk colors during the
WYLD Bill 5K. In fact, Tim Broe noted that three Olympic steeplechasers
were coaching in Hillsdale: Brian Diemer coaching Calvin College ('84
Bronze, '88, '92); Robert Gary coaching The Ohio State ('96, '04); Mark
Croghan coaching Kent State ('92,'96, '00)
Chuck Block, race director for many of the Lansing area races, was
happy with his Lansing Community College team. The team took third
place in the 4 x 800 meter relay-- its best-ever showing at the Hillsdale
"Gina" relays.
We also had fun watching Paul Babits in the pole vault. Babits owns the
world indoor record for the 45-49 age group and his form shows the
confidence one would expect of a world-class vaulter.
__/ GREAT PERFORMANCES - TRACK AND FIELD
This is just a smattering of the weekend's great performances:
Drake Relays - Michigan women took No. 1: in the 4 x 800 meter relay
(8:39.59):
Theresa Feldkamp, Geena Gall, Nicole Edwards and Katie Erdman Jr.
Alyson Koyhlmeier and Chanelle Campbell joined Erdman and
Edwards for the DMR victory (11:06.13).
Erin Webster joined Gall, Kohlmeier and Edwards for third in the 4 x
1600 meter relay (19:39.03).
Drake Relays - Eastern Michigan Women took third in the 4 x 200 meter
relay (1:36.49): Ashley McCullough, Bria Woods, Lintera Harvin, and
Patrice Beasley.
Eastern Michigan Women won the 4 x 100 meter shuttle hurdle relays
(55.76) with the team of Ashley McCullough, Andrea Wheeler, Shamarie
Giscombe and Chrystal Dooley.
Hillsdale "Gina" Relays - Paul Aufdemberge ran the second-fastest
American 10,000 on the track with a 30:09.39. Paul already owns the
fastest time, set last year at this same meet. It was fun watching Paul
start off at the back of the pack and pick-off several runners with each
lap. Paul finished 12th out of 61 runners.
__/ GREAT PERFORMANCES - ROAD RACING - Laurel Park placed
second (35:18) among the masters runners and sixth overall at the very
competitive Sallie Mae 10-K in Washington on Sunday.
