If anyone out there still doubts that Michigan is a running mecca,
consider our

FLYING PIG
OK, here we go:
__/ PAUL AUFDEMBERGE SETS PENDING MASTERS RECORD ON
THE TRACK
Running for the Front Line Racing Team in the 10,000 meter race at the
Hillsdale
Gina Relays on April 29, Paul Aufdemberge set a pending new masters
record. First
reported by "Relay" Fred Vanhala, USA Track and Field confirmed the
pending record
on May 2.
In his first track 10,000 since turning 40, Michigan's Paul Aufdemberge
ran a
pending U.S. Masters record of 30:04.43, finishing tenth in the
invitational
10,000 at the Hillsdale "GINA" Relays. Aufdemberge was also named
Male Track
Athlete of the meet for his performance."
Aufdemberge, an alumnus of Hillsdale College, chose his college track
for his
masters debut. Aufdemberge is a three-time Michigan Runner of the
Year (1996,
1999, 2000), competed in the USA Olympic Team Trials, Mens
Marathon in 2004,
and finished second overall at the 2004 Columbus Marathon.
Fred Vanhala reports the race: "It was a perfect evening for running.
Paul
went out in 14:49 for the 5K (setting a new outdoor team record with
another
5K to go!) and came back with a 15:15 2nd 5K.
"We all know that Paul is God's gift to Michigan running. What's great
about
Paul is he is a better man than he is a runner-- just as humble a guy as
you'd
ever want to meet. I know I could learn a few things from him."
Sandy Paskin of USATF confirmed that the official record of 30:37.94
was set by
Craig Young at the USA Masters Track & Field Championships in
Orono, Maine on
August 1, 1998. Sandy also explains "pending" in an email to me:
"All records set during the year are pending until the USATF Convention
in
December. The records are ratified at convention by the appropriate
sports
committee and the records committee. The performance and record form
must comply
with USATF rules pertaining to records. The records listed on the USATF
website
are the official records."
__/ 3 HANSONS-BROOKS RUNNERS NAMED TO US WORLD
CHAMPIONSHIP MARATHON TEAM:
TRENT BRINEY, CLINT VERRAN AND BRIAN SELL
"INDIANAPOLIS-USA Track & Field announced Team USA's marathon
representatives
for the 2005 IAAF World Championships in Athletics to be held in
Helsinki,
Finland August 6-14.
Men's roster:
Trent Briney, 26, of Rochester Hills, Mich., burst on to the U.S. scene
with
a fourth-place (2:12:34) performance at the 2004 U.S. Olympic Men's
Marathon
Trials. It was that performance that earned him his first Team USA
appearance.
Recent performances from Briney include a personal best of 28:44 for
10,000
meters at the Stanford Invitational. Briney was a four-time NCAA
Division II
All-American at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs.
Brian Sell, 27, of Rochester Hills, Mich., also made his mark at the 2004
Olympic Trials Marathon. After leading by as much as one minute, he
eventually
faded to 12th. Not disheartened by the experience, Sell reappeared at
the
2004 LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon, finishing with a personal best of
2:13:18.
In 2005 Sell has continued his progress with a second-place finish at
the
USA 10 Mile Championships (47:37) and a ninth-place finish (first U.S.)
at
the Lilac Bloomsday Run on May 1.
Clint Verran, 29, of Rochester Hills, Mich., is an IAAF World
Championships
Marathon veteran finishing 39th (2:16:42) in 2003 in Paris. His
international
experience also includes a 17th place finish at the 2000 IAAF World
Half
Marathon Championships. In 2005, Verran was the top U.S. finisher at

website at http://www.michiganfitness.org.
__/ MICHIGAN LEGEND DON CANHAM PASSES
"They have to open Crisler Arena to accommodate the number of
people
that want to pay their respects to this Michigan legend. At 11:30 this
Saturday, May 7, thousands of people will celebrate the end of a life
that has impacted so many. He was the NCAA high jump champion, a
teacher,
an administrator, a businessman and a visionary who helped found the
field
of sports management. Canham pioneered the movement as Michigan
AD in
intercollegiate sports, on the state and national level, just as Mark
McCormack did with professional sports on the national and
international
level. Canham went from a student athlete in track at the U of M to a
storied athletic director. His legacy in track and field is still being
carried out by one of his early hires, Ron Warhurst. Mr. Canham,
thanks for the memories."
